For Hannah, it became one of the standout moments of her holiday.

'Seeing the Uxmal Maya pyramid. We went late in the afternoon and there was hardly anyone else there.'

That peaceful atmosphere is one of the reasons so many people fall in love with Uxmal.

Instead of moving through crowds, there's time to stop and admire the intricate stone carvings, beautifully preserved façades and impressive ceremonial buildings that make Uxmal one of the finest surviving examples of Puuc architecture.

Hannah also remembers one of the site's most unusual traditions.

'We stood in front of the pyramid and clapped. The echo sounds like the call of a quetzal.'

When we asked Mihaela to compare the two sites, her answer perfectly summed up why choosing between them isn't easy.

'Having visited both, I'd say Chichén Itzá is the place to go if seeing one of the New Seven Wonders of the World is on your bucket list. Standing in front of Kukulkan is really impressive and it's easy to see why it's so famous. Uxmal, though, was my favourite. It was much quieter and more relaxed, so I could take my time exploring the beautiful buildings, detailed carvings and impressive façades without lots of people around. It was also much easier to take photos.'

It's a great summary of the biggest difference between the two sites.
