When Do You Want To Go?

The vast savannahs of Rupununi have been home to Amerindian tribes and earlier indigenous populations for near 7,000 years. Some villages still remain and the draw of the Rupununi remains in the opportunity to experience the Amazonian jungle whilst staying in community-led lodges and to engage with the ancient customs of Amerindian hosts. The African-esque savannahs are staggeringly beautiful and due to its location which straddles the Amazon and Guiana Shield regions, there is a high diversity of flora and fauna with over 2,000 species of vertebrates, including many endangered species.

The community lodges provide the best opportunity to experience the biodiversity of Guyana and there are many immersive excursions available to guests. Paddle through wildlife abundant rivers on traditional canoes to observe basking caimans and giant otters; hike in the pockets of jungle with expert birdwatchers or visit the community enterprise that helps rehabilitate rescued captive wildlife. As can be expected, the lodges have only basic levels of accommodation but for an authentic wildlife-fuelled pristine Amazonian experience, there are few places on the continent that can match Rupununi.

When is the Best Time to visit Rupununi Savannah?

Perhaps more so than other regions of Guyana, Rupununi is best visited in the dry seasons when the flora is at its most verdant and days can be spent exploring the savannahs in the sunshine with low chances of rain and with lower humidity levels. The Spring months of February and March would be an ideal time to visit, although the months of October and November are also very pleasant.

How Do I Reach The Rupununi Savannah?

Due to limited infrastructure and poor roads, the only feasible way to reach Rupununi is via a scenic flight from the capital Georgetown. Travelling by small aircraft to the savannah region is an experience in itself though and by air is the best way to appreciate the verdant vastness of Guyana’s hearty interior. Upon arrival at the small airport, 4x4 vehicles will transport you deep into Rupununi to your community ran lodge.
