Go on a 4x4 desert adventure to the Salt Flats

The Salt Flats, or Salar de Uyuni, are an incredible natural phenomenon found in the South of Bolivia.  Take a 4x4 adventure across this eerie, crystalline landscape, watch sunset colour the salt pink and orange and marvel as geysers and hot springs steam into the cold air.

Soak up the atmosphere in La Paz

La Paz is a maze of colourful markets, historical buildings and tiny, welcoming cafes.  Buy handmade souvenirs and see traditional remedies at the Witches Market, go to a Cholita wrestling match or head to the beautiful Calle Jaén for some great museums and colonial architecture.

Visit the Silver Mines of Potosi

Entering the silver mines of Potosi is not for the faint hearted, but a tour here will give you a totally different perspective on Bolivia.  This was the origin of much of Bolivia’s colonial wealth, but remains a place where workers endure difficult working conditions.  Authentic and eyeopening, tours are usually led by ex-miners who can give you a real insight into life working here.

Lake Titicaca

Stretching over the border between Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca is a must see for any traveller.  Its impossibly blue waters are bordered by the Andes on one side, making for some fabulous views.  The largest lake in South America, its easy to see why this is considered the birth place of the sun.

Take a Boat to Sun Island

With views towards snow capped mountains, the deep waters of Lake Titicaca and, of course, some outrageously beautiful sunsets and sunrises, it doesn’t get much more tranquil than Isla de Sol.  Take a boat trip over for the day, or spend a night on the island itself for the chance to explore the many walking trails and Inca ruins.

Copacabana Basilica

During your time in Copacabana, why not visit the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana?  Take a look at the image of Our Lady of Copacabana herself, the patron saint of Bolivia and hugely important to both the local indigenous and Catholic faith.

Historic streets of Sucre

Organised around the historic square of Plaza 25 de Mayo, complete with covered walk ways and a beautiful cathedral, central Sucre is a delight to wander around.  Whether you want to go souvenir shopping, relax with a coffee or simply sit and watch the world go by, Sucre is the place to be.  If you fancy something more energetic, there is some beautiful trekking to be found in the surrounding countryside.

Bolivian Amazon

Home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna, the Bolivian Amazon is the ideal destination for a wildlife adventure.  You’ll come face to face with colourful birds and monkeys, boat past pink river dolphins and caiman and maybe even spot an elusive sloth!

Go to Lake Titicaca >

Sun Island

Wake up to the Andes turning pink across the water, take a hike through the island or wander around ancient Incan ruins.  With no cars and no paved roads, Isla de Sol is a haven of rest and relaxation.  Even the boat journey here is an experience not to be forgotten.

Go to Sun Island >

 Potosi

With a charming, colonial centre, Potosi was once one of the world’s richest cities.  Meander through the colourful streets to soak up the atmosphere, or take a tour of the (still working) silver mines for an eye opening look into a darker side of Bolivian history.

Go to Potosi >

Sucre

Perhaps Bolivia’s least frenetic city, Sucre is perfect for lazy afternoons spent perusing colonial architecture or enjoying the gardens and squares. With a variety of local markets and surrounded by beautiful countryside, it deserves a day or two of your trip.
