Argentina is a country that reveals itself in layers. One moment you are standing in the mist of Iguazú Falls, the next you are sipping wine beneath the Andes, or travelling through vast, open landscapes where the horizon feels endless. It is this contrast, paired with a strong sense of culture and place, creating journeys through Argentina that reveal why it is one of the most rewarding destinations in Latin America.
Our team has travelled extensively across the country, from the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires to the remote beauty of Patagonia and the lesser explored northwest. These are the moments, regions and experiences that continue to stand out, and why Argentina remains such a special place to explore.
First impressions of Argentina
For many, Argentina leaves a lasting impression from the very beginning.
“Arriving into Buenos Aires and seeing the city unfold beneath us was such a moment,” says Sarah. “It immediately felt vibrant and full of energy.”Buenos Aires is often the natural starting point. It is a city of contrasts, where grand architecture meets creative neighbourhoods, and where culture is woven into everyday life. From tango halls to leafy plazas, it offers an introduction to Argentina that feels both familiar and completely distinct.
But while the capital draws you in, it is what lies beyond that truly defines a journey here.
Iguazú Falls: one of Argentina’s most powerful experiences
There are certain places that stay with you long after you return home. Iguazu Falls is one of those.
“Iguazú Falls. It’s one of the most powerful natural sights I’ve ever experienced and you feel it before you even see it,” says Chelsea. The falls are not just a visual highlight, they are an experience. The sound builds as you approach, the air fills with mist, and suddenly you are surrounded by cascading water on every side.
Exploring both sides of the falls is key. The Argentinian side brings you close, with walkways that lead directly above and beside the water, while the Brazilian side offers wide, panoramic views that reveal the full scale of this natural wonder.
It is often the perfect way to begin or end an Argentina itinerary.
Patagonia: space, scale and stillness
Further south, Patagonia offers something entirely different.
“It’s the sense of space,” says Gaynor. “You feel completely immersed in nature.”This is where Argentina feels at its most expansive. Glaciers stretch across vast landscapes, mountains rise sharply from the earth, and there is a quiet stillness that defines the experience.
Perito Moreno Glacier is a highlight for many.
“It’s incredible to watch,” says Chelsea. “You see and hear the ice cracking, and then suddenly it breaks away into the water.”Beyond El Calafate, areas such as El Chaltén offer exceptional hiking, while combining Patagonia with Chile’s Torres del Paine creates a seamless journey through some of the most striking scenery in Latin America.
Northwest Argentina: a journey through colour, culture and contrast
For those looking to experience something different, the northwest offers a completely new perspective.
This is a region shaped by high altitude landscapes, desert valleys and deep rooted traditions. From Salta to Cafayate, the journey itself becomes just as memorable as the destinations.
Senior Product Executive Sarah and our co-founder and director Martin Johnson explored this region on a self drive journey, giving them the freedom to experience it at their own pace.
“Travelling by car meant we could stop whenever we wanted, take in the views and really immerse ourselves in the landscapes,” Sarah explains.Their route took them through Salta, Purmamarca, Salinas Grandes, Tilcara, Cachi and Cafayate, with each destination offering something different.

“The landscapes between them often stole the show,” they shared. This part of Argentina is known for its dramatic scenery, from red rock valleys to high altitude salt flats and colourful mountains. The Quebrada de Humahuaca, once an important trade route, still reflects a rich blend of indigenous and colonial heritage today.
Cafayate, at the heart of the Calchaquí Valleys, brings a completely different atmosphere. Surrounded by vineyards and striking rock formations, it is known for its high altitude wines and relaxed pace of life.
“Arriving into Cafayate after the drive felt really special,” says Sarah. “It’s peaceful, scenic and a complete contrast to anywhere else in Argentina.”The route from Salta to Cafayate is one of the most scenic drives in the country, passing through formations such as the Quebrada de las Conchas, where wind and water have carved dramatic red rock landscapes over time.
For those seeking a deeper connection to Argentina’s culture and landscapes, this region offers something truly distinctive.
Argentina through food, wine and local experiences
Argentina’s landscapes are only part of the story. Food and wine play an essential role in shaping the experience. Which makes Mendoza essential for an ideal itinerary for Argentina Holidays.
“Malbec in Mendoza is a must,” says Tom. “But it’s not just the wine, it’s the setting. Vineyards framed by the Andes make it feel really special.”In the northwest, the experience feels different again. Cafayate is known for its high altitude vineyards, producing distinctive wines shaped by the climate and elevation.
Dining across Argentina is rarely rushed. Meals are social, relaxed and centred around quality ingredients.

“It’s about the atmosphere as much as the food,” says Giuliano. “You take your time, enjoy the wine, and really settle into the moment.”Whether it is a traditional asado or a long lunch overlooking the vines, these moments become an integral part of the journey.
Meaningful travel moments that define a trip
While Argentina is known for its iconic highlights, it is often the quieter experiences that stay with you.
“Spending a day on a ranch near El Calafate was really special,” says Giuliano. “It gives you a completely different perspective.”These moments offer insight into daily life and create a stronger connection to the destination. They also reflect the way we design journeys at Latin Routes, combining well known highlights with experiences that feel more personal and immersive.
How it feels to travel in Argentina
There is a shared understanding across the team when describing Argentina.
“It’s incredibly varied but always full of energy,” says Sarah.Others focus on its scale.
“It feels big, in every sense,” says Gaynor. “Big landscapes, big flavours, big experiences.”Despite that, travelling here feels straightforward when planned well. Internal flights and private transfers allow you to combine regions with ease, whether you are exploring Patagonia, the northwest or the wine regions.
This is where specialist knowledge makes a difference. Understanding how to balance distances, experiences and pace is key to creating a seamless itinerary.
Our top tips for travelling in Argentina
The team’s advice reflects their first hand experience.
“Take your time and don’t try to do everything in one trip,” says Sarah. “Focus on a few regions and really enjoy them.”
“Mix different landscapes,” adds Tom. “That contrast is what makes Argentina so special.”
“And plan your journey carefully,” says Giuliano. “It’s a large country, so structuring your route properly makes all the difference.”For those considering the northwest, Sarah and Martin recommend allowing time for the journey itself, not just the destinations.
“It’s one of those places where the drive is just as memorable as where you’re going,” they explain. Why Argentina stays with you
Argentina is not just about ticking off highlights. It is about how those places make you feel.
From the energy of Buenos Aires to the stillness of Patagonia and the colour and culture of the northwest, every journey offers something different. It is a destination that invites you to explore deeply, travel at your own pace and return with stories that stay with you.
