Discover Oliver’s favourite places in Argentina
During Oliver’s journey through Argentina, each destination offered a different perspective, from the glaciers and mountains of Patagonia to the vineyards of Mendoza, the colourful landscapes of the northwest and the waterfalls of Iguazú. Exploring the diverse regions of Argentina revealed a country shaped by dramatic scenery, strong local culture and experiences that make it one of South America’s most rewarding places to discover.

In my role as Product Executive at Latin Routes, I spend time researching the destinations, experiences and hotels that truly stand out across Latin America. After more than fifteen years in the tailor made travel industry and a long standing interest in the region, I am always looking for the places that bring a journey to life.
Argentina continues to be one of my favourite countries to work with. Below are some of the regions of Argentina I most enjoy including in itineraries, along with the experiences and hotels that I believe help travellers connect with each destination.
Buenos Aires: culture, cuisine and tango
Buenos Aires is often the starting point for an Argentina journey, and it is a city that deserves time to explore properly. Its grand architecture, café culture and vibrant neighbourhoods give it a character quite unlike anywhere else in Latin America.

One experience I regularly recommend is Fogón Asado, a small restaurant dedicated to Argentina’s famous grilling tradition. Guests sit around the kitchen counter while chefs prepare a carefully curated tasting menu, each course paired with excellent wines. It is an engaging introduction to the country’s culinary culture.
For those wanting to experience tango beyond the theatre stage, a milonga experience offers something far more authentic. After a private lesson, visitors join a local milonga where porteños gather to dance. Watching locals move across the floor is a wonderful insight into one of Argentina’s most iconic traditions.
Where I like to stay
Mine Boutique Hotel in Palermo offers a calm and stylish base in one of the city’s most enjoyable neighbourhoods, surrounded by excellent restaurants and cafés.

Another favourite is Legado Mítico, a characterful boutique hotel where each room celebrates a different Argentine cultural figure.

Iguazu Falls: one of the world’s great natural wonders
Few natural sights create the same impact as Iguazu Falls. More than 275 cascades stretch across the border between Argentina and Brazil, surrounded by lush Atlantic rainforest.

Exploring Parque Nacional Iguazú on the Argentine side allows visitors to experience the largest section of the falls. Walkways lead through the rainforest to several different viewpoints, including the dramatic Garganta del Diablo, or Devil’s Throat, where enormous volumes of water plunge into the gorge below.
The surrounding forest is also rich in wildlife, with colourful birdlife, butterflies and playful coatis often spotted along the trails.
For a completely different perspective, a helicopter flight over the falls reveals the immense scale of this natural system and the vast jungle that surrounds it.
Where I like to stay
Awasi Iguazú offers a particularly exclusive experience, with private villas set within the rainforest and tailored excursions led by personal guides.

LOI Suites Iguazú is another excellent choice, located within the Iryapú rainforest reserve. Elevated walkways and bridges wind through the forest canopy, giving the property a wonderfully immersive setting.

Iberá wetlands: Argentina’s wildlife haven
The Iberá Wetlands are one of Argentina’s most exciting conservation destinations. Covering around 13,000 square kilometres, this immense protected ecosystem is home to remarkable biodiversity.

Exploring the wetlands with expert guides reveals wildlife including capybara, caiman, marsh deer and an impressive variety of birdlife. Ongoing rewilding projects have also helped reintroduce species that had previously disappeared from the region.
Boat excursions through the lagoons and quiet walks across the grasslands provide an opportunity to appreciate the calm and natural beauty of this lesser visited region of Argentina.
Where I like to stay
Rincón del Socorro is a beautifully restored estancia located within the Iberá conservation area. Staying here offers a meaningful connection to the rewilding work taking place in the wetlands while providing comfortable accommodation and excellent guiding.

Bariloche and the Lake District: Patagonia’s alpine landscapes
Northern Patagonia feels very different again, with snow capped peaks, deep blue lakes and forests stretching across the foothills of the Andes.

The town of Bariloche sits on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi and serves as a gateway to the region’s outdoor experiences. Hiking, cycling, horse riding and kayaking are all possible here, surrounded by striking scenery.
One of the most peaceful ways to explore the area is kayaking on Lago Gutiérrez, where calm waters reflect the surrounding mountains and forests.
These regions of Argentina offer so much with dramatic scenery and adventure
Where I like to stay
Estancia Peuma Hue sits within Nahuel Huapi National Park across hundreds of acres of private wilderness. Activities such as hiking, horse riding and kayaking begin directly from the property, while the estancia’s welcoming atmosphere makes it feel wonderfully personal.

Mendoza: Argentina’s celebrated wine region
Mendoza is Argentina’s most famous wine region and an essential stop for anyone interested in food and wine. Vineyards stretch across the foothills of the Andes, creating a beautiful backdrop for relaxed exploration.

Many travellers base themselves in Chacras de Coria, a charming village just outside Mendoza city. Its leafy streets, small restaurants and boutique wineries create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
Days here might include cycling between vineyards, enjoying long winery lunches or learning about Argentine cuisine in a cooking class.
Where I like to stay
Lares de Chacras is one of my preferred boutique hotels in the area. Located within walking distance of the village centre, it offers a comfortable and intimate base for exploring nearby wineries.
.
El Calafate and El Chaltén: the wild landscapes of Patagonia
Southern Patagonia offers some of Argentina’s most dramatic scenery. Vast steppe landscapes stretch towards snow covered peaks and enormous glaciers within Los Glaciares National Park.

From El Calafate, visitors explore the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, where towering walls of ice regularly break away and crash into the turquoise waters below.
Further north lies El Chaltén, widely known as Argentina’s hiking capital. Trails lead through forests and valleys towards views of the iconic Mount Fitz Roy, one of Patagonia’s most recognisable peaks.
Where I like to stay
Near El Calafate, Eolo is a beautiful Patagonian estancia set across 10,000 acres of open steppe. The sense of space here is extraordinary and the property offers a peaceful retreat after exploring the glaciers.
In El Chaltén, Explora Patagonia National Park Lodge provides a refined base for discovering the surrounding landscapes. Guided explorations are included and tailored to each guest, making it a wonderful way to experience this remarkable region.
