Our routes in El Salvador: lakes, volcanoes and adventure

For this instalment of Our Routes, Alex Lopez, Senior Travel Specialist, shares his first journey through one of Central America’s most exciting and diverse destinations, El Salvador. From peaceful lakes and coffee-clad hills to ancient archaeological sites and dramatic volcanic landscapes, this small but mighty country is full of surprises for those who love nature, history and authentic culture. Lets explore Our Routes in El Salvador.

Our routes in El Salvador: lakes, volcanoes and adventure

Which destinations did you visit on your trip?

My journey through El Salvador took me across a wonderful variety of landscapes and towns. In Suchitoto, I wandered through cobbled streets lined with colourful colonial buildings and enjoyed views over the shimmering Lake Suchitlán. I explored the lively town of Santa Ana, with its striking neo-Gothic cathedral, and climbed the nearby Santa Ana Volcano, one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks.

At Lake Coatepeque, I stayed in a peaceful hotel perched on the edge of this deep blue volcanic crater lake. I also visited Tazumal, an impressive Mayan archaeological site that offers a fascinating glimpse into El Salvador’s ancient past, and La Joya de Cerén, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often referred to as the Pompeii of the Americas. In Ataco, I discovered colourful murals and local crafts, while in El Carmen Estate I joined a coffee tour to learn more about one of the country’s most important exports. My trip ended at El Tunco Beach, where surfers and travellers gather for incredible sunsets, and in San Salvador’s historic centre, where vibrant markets, plazas and architecture reflect the country’s energy and pride.

How did you get there?

This trip was part of an invitation from the El Salvador Tourism Board. I flew from London Heathrow to Madrid and then onward to El Salvador with Iberia.

Was this your first time in El Salvador?

Yes, it was my first visit to El Salvador, and it exceeded all expectations. For a country often overlooked by travellers, it offers an amazing range of experiences in a compact area, from cultural heritage and adventure to relaxation and natural beauty.

What was your favourite location and why?

Lake Coatepeque completely won me over. It is a stunning crater lake surrounded by green hills and peaceful villages. I arrived at sunset and went straight for a swim in the warm, clear water as the light softened across the landscape. The next morning, I woke early for another dip before heading off to hike the nearby Santa Ana Volcano. The combination of calm water and powerful volcanic scenery was unforgettable and truly captured the essence of El Salvador’s beauty.

What was your most memorable moment?

Hiking the Santa Ana Volcano was one of the best travel experiences I’ve had in Latin America. The path winds through lush cloud forest, alive with birdsong, before opening up to breath taking views of the surrounding mountains. At the summit, I was rewarded with a surreal sight: a turquoise crater lake shimmering below. The colours, the scale and the sense of achievement made the experience extraordinary.

How safe did you feel while travelling?

I felt very safe throughout the trip. Even on my first night, when my luggage was delayed by the airline and I had to walk to a nearby shopping centre to pick up essentials, I felt completely at ease. Everyone I met was welcoming and eager to share their love for their country. The rest of my group, aged between 25 and 70, felt the same way.

What was the best excursion or experience?

For me, it was a perfect mix of adventure and discovery. Swimming in Lake Coatepeque and hiking the Santa Ana Volcano were unforgettable, but I also loved visiting El Carmen Estate to learn about the coffee-making process from bean to cup. The visit to Tazumal was another highlight, standing before ancient pyramids that connect modern El Salvador to its Mayan roots. Every stop revealed something new and genuine about the country.

What would you recommend packing or preparing for?

El Salvador is a country best explored with an open mind and curiosity. The tourism infrastructure is still growing, but what it may lack in polish it makes up for in warmth, authenticity and natural beauty. I visited in June, during the rainy season, but only experienced light showers. Bring lightweight clothing, shorts, a rain jacket, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and comfortable shoes for exploring. A reusable water bottle, camera and a sense of adventure are also must-haves.

What food or drink stood out most on your trip?

Without a doubt, the pupusa. These handmade stuffed tortillas are soft, filling and incredibly tasty. They are such a beloved part of Salvadoran culture that there is even a national Pupusa Day, celebrated every November. I also enjoyed trying locally grown coffee, which was rich and aromatic, especially when sampled fresh at El Carmen Estate.
