Panama is one of those destinations that completely takes you by surprise. It’s a country where the Caribbean and Pacific meet, where lush rainforests sit alongside dazzling beaches and sleek modern cities. Every region has its own rhythm, and travelling through it feels like a journey through several worlds in one.
Latin Routes Travel Specialist Nicole Mifsud shares her experiences exploring Bocas Del Toro, Boca Chica, Panama City and the San Blas Islands – a trip full of wildlife, culture and unforgettable scenery.
How Did You Get To Panama?
My journey began overland from Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. After a short drive to the border at Sixaola, I crossed into Panama with surprising ease before continuing with a road transfer to a small coastal port. From there, a speedboat carried me through beautiful mangroves to Bocas Del Toro Town on Isla Colón.
Gliding across turquoise water surrounded by lush greenery, I immediately knew I was heading somewhere special. The moment the boat pulled into Bocas Town, with its colourful wooden houses, lively waterfront and reggae music drifting through the air, I felt the vibrant energy that makes this part of Panama so unique.

Was It Your First Time Visiting Panama?
Yes – this was my first trip, and it completely exceeded my expectations. I knew Panama was diverse, but I hadn’t realised quite how much the landscapes and pace of life change between each region. From the laid-back rhythm of the islands to the elegance of the Pacific coast and the buzz of Panama City, every stop felt distinct and exciting. It’s a country I’d love to return to and explore in even greater depth.

Which Destination Was Your Favourite?
Without question, Bocas Del Toro was my favourite. It’s a haven for wildlife and nature lovers, where rainforest meets ocean in the most magical way. Red Frog Beach was a highlight – surrounded by dense jungle alive with sound. I spotted sloths draped lazily over branches, monkeys swinging overhead and bright poison dart and blue jeans frogs hopping among the leaves.
Beyond the beaches, I loved exploring by water taxi – moving between small islands where locals welcome you with warm smiles and simple, delicious food. There’s a wonderful sense of community here, paired with an easy-going island charm that’s impossible not to fall in love with.

What Was Your Most Memorable Moment?
My visit to the Miraflores Locks near Panama City was an experience I’ll never forget. Watching huge ships rise and fall as they passed through the canal was utterly fascinating. The precision of the operation and the scale of the engineering were remarkable – it’s one of those moments that leaves you in awe of human ingenuity.
Standing on the viewing deck as the sun began to set, I could see how this extraordinary canal connects two oceans and plays such a vital role in global trade. It’s a powerful reminder of Panama’s place in the world and a sight that truly defines the country.

What Was The Best Experience On Your Trip?
Snorkelling around the San Blas Islands was pure magic. The water there is unbelievably clear, with coral gardens full of colour and starfish scattered across the seabed. Each island is small and perfectly formed – soft white sand, palm trees swaying gently, and barely a footprint in sight.
What made this experience even more special was learning about the Guna Yala people, who have lived in harmony with these islands for centuries. Their warm hospitality and deep respect for nature made the visit feel not just beautiful, but meaningful. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

What Do You Recommend Packing For Panama?
Light, breathable, quick-drying clothing is essential. I travelled at the start of the wet season, and although the weather stayed warm, tropical showers can appear without warning. A lightweight rain jacket and practical footwear were invaluable, especially when exploring by boat or through rainforest trails.
I’d also recommend water shoes, plenty of sun protection, and a dry bag for island-hopping trips. Panama invites adventure, and being well prepared means you can make the most of every moment – rain or shine.
Where Did You Find The Best Food And Drink?
In Panama City, I loved discovering Café Coca Cola – one of the city’s oldest and most characterful cafés. It’s a laid-back, unpretentious spot where locals and travellers mingle over strong coffee and hearty Panamanian dishes.
The café’s history is fascinating; over the years, it’s welcomed an incredible list of visitors including Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Evita Perón and even Daniel Craig. Sitting there with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, watching daily life unfold around me, was a wonderful way to connect with the city’s past and present.
What Makes Panama So Special In Your Opinion?
Panama is a country that truly rewards curiosity. Every destination feels distinct – from the pristine beaches and coral reefs of Bocas Del Toro to the serene coastline of Boca Chica, and from the remote islands of San Blas to the dazzling skyline of Panama City.
It’s this diversity that makes Panama so captivating. You can start the day snorkelling in the Caribbean, have lunch in a rainforest lodge, and end it dining beside one of the world’s most iconic waterways.
Panama might be compact in size, but it offers enormous variety and authenticity. For me, it was a journey that combined natural wonder, cultural richness and a genuine sense of adventure.
