In the latest installment of the popular Our Routes series, our marketing manager Laura Radford tells us about the super relaxing side of Belize’s many charms, from its golden beaches to the aquatic wonders of the dazzling reef wildlife.

What were the main destinations you visited on your trip to Belize's Reefs & Cayes?
During the holiday to Belize I visited Hopkins, Placencia, Caye Caulker, San Pedro/Ambergris Caye.

I flew with British Airways from London Heathrow to Miami, USA, and then flew with American Airlines from Miami direct to Belize City.
Was this your first time in Belize or a repeat trip?
This was my first time visiting Belize. I’ve always been a little bit fascinated by this small Caribbean, English-speaking nation, in the heart of Central America, since I watched Levison Wood Walking the Americas.

What was your favourite location?
My visit very much focused on the reefs & cayes of which Belize is so famous. I really liked the laid-back atmosphere and vibe of Caye Caulker, and the opportunities for lots of snorkelling experiences here and in Ambergris Caye, I’d have to say these places stood out to me the most. But I also loved the more authentic side of Belize found in Hopkins and Placencia.

What was your most memorable moment on your trip?
Snorkelling with nurse sharks in Hol Chan Marine Reserve was a stand-out moment, an incredible amount of nurse sharks flock to the boats here, as well as an amazing array of other marine life, we also snorkelled at Laughing Bird Caye where the fish were in abundance, to be honest, all the snorkelling experiences in Belize are amazing! I also rather enjoyed driving a golf cart around San Pedro, this is the number one way to get around, usually driving barefoot!

What was the best excursion or experience on your Belize Holiday?
It’s so hard to choose, there were so many. I really enjoyed the sunset cruise we had on our final night in Belize in San Pedro. The weather was stunning, the sunset did not disappoint. If you enjoy boat trips, snorkelling, small islands, beautiful marine life and amazing people with a laid-back vibe, Belize is for you!

What do you recommend packing or prepping for on a trip to Belize?
If you stay in and around the cayes, you can expect lots of boat transfers, and whilst your suitcase will be with you, if you need anything within easy reach have a beach style bag or backpack to hand with your essentials as this is far easier to access. Also, come with a relaxed attitude, Belizean’s take life at a nice pace so don’t expect everything in a hurry, it’s part of the charm!
What was your favourite food and drink in Belize?
FRIED JACKS! These are phenomenal! A traditional dish in Belizean cuisine. They are deep-fried dough pieces typically served for breakfast. Great with eggs, and good for dipping in refried beans, which are often served with a more traditional breakfast.
