Guatemala is a country that captures you quietly. It isn’t just its landscapes, although the volcanic highlands, mirror-smooth lakes and dense rainforest are extraordinary. It’s the atmosphere, the warmth of its people and the sense of stepping into a place shaped by deep heritage and everyday life lived with real pride. When our team sat together sharing stories from their own journeys, it became clear that Guatemala had left each of us with moments that felt personal, meaningful and entirely unforgettable. What follows is our collective reflection on a country that rewards time, curiosity and an open heart.
Senior Travel specialist for Latin Routes, Alex Wessely explains more in Our Routes Guatemala: a holiday that stays with you.
I’ve always felt that Guatemala leaves a lasting impression in a way few countries do. It isn’t only the scenery, although that is extraordinary. It’s the rhythm of daily life, the warmth of the people and the quiet moments that stay with you long after you return home. When the team and I sat together talking about our experiences, it became clear how differently the country had shaped each of our journeys. The conversation flowed easily, filled with small details, shared memories and that feeling of having connected with a place on a deeper level.
Chakira’s moment
Chakira was the first to speak. “For me, it’s sunrise on Lake Atitlán,” she said. “The lake goes completely still. It’s like everything pauses for a moment.” She described travelling by private boat across the glassy water, watching thin trails of coffee smoke rise from the villages along the shoreline. In San Juan La Laguna, workshops were opening and the smell of freshly ground beans drifted through the air. “Everyone greeted me like an old friend,” she added. “You instantly feel part of something.”

Her tip was simple: “Go early. The lake is calm, the colours are beautiful, and a private boat makes the day feel effortless.”Charlie’s moment
Charlie didn’t hesitate. “Tikal,” he said with a grin. “You hear the jungle before you see the temples.” He talked about howler monkeys echoing through the forest, flashes of green from toucans overhead and the sense of entering a place shaped by centuries of history. His guide helped him understand the stories woven into the stonework and the significance of each structure.
But the moment that stayed with him most was climbing Temple IV. “The mist hung over the canopy and everything felt still,” he said. “It’s one of those views that stays with you for years.”

His advice mirrored what many travellers discover: “Stay nearby and explore early or later in the day. It’s cooler and far more atmospheric.”Lewis’s moment
Lewis nodded in agreement before sharing his own memory of the region. “My standout moment was also at Tikal,” he said. “Reaching the top of Temple IV felt like stepping into another world. The forest stretches out in every direction and for a moment everything feels completely still.” He explained how the timing of his visit shaped the experience even more. “We went later in the day and the light was incredible. That warm golden hour glow settled over the canopy and the whole site felt calm and almost empty. It’s a completely different atmosphere to the morning.”
His tip: “If you can, time one of your visits for late afternoon. The sun drops low, the colours soften and the crowds thin out. It’s a beautiful way to see Tikal at its most peaceful.”My moment
When it came to me, I knew immediately what I would choose. Antigua has always been my favourite. It’s one of those cities that feels instantly welcoming. I remember wandering along the cobbled streets early in the morning, hearing gentle conversations drifting through open doorways and catching the warm scent of tortillas being cooked on family stoves. The pastel façades glowed in the soft light, and the surrounding volcanoes created a dramatic backdrop that somehow felt comforting rather than imposing.
Antigua has a way of letting you explore without any real plan. One moment you stumble into a courtyard filled with plants, the next you’re browsing a small craft market or settling into a café you hadn’t even noticed at first glance. The city feels both historic and alive, shaped by everyday details rather than grand gestures.
It also makes an excellent base for exploring the wider region. Private transfers to coffee farms, viewpoints and artisan villages make everything simple and enjoyable. But what I always tell people is this: the magic of Antigua often lies in the quieter moments. Sitting in the main square watching families go about their morning, listening to the distant ring of church bells or simply taking in the colours and rhythms as you wander.

My tip is always to stay for at least two full days. Let the city unfold at its own pace.Do not rush it
As we kept talking, a theme emerged. Guatemala rewards time. This isn’t a place to tick off quickly. Its landscapes shift from cool highland lakes to dense rainforest, and its culture runs deep, shaped by communities who hold their traditions close. When you travel slowly, you start noticing the subtler textures: the friendliness of a greeting, the soft afternoon light on painted walls, the sound of a weaving loom tapping in the background, the reassuring ease of daily life unfolding around you.
Travelling at a relaxed pace gives space for connection - with people, with history and with the natural world. These are the moments that stay with you, each carrying its own quiet significance.

Bringing it all together
Reflecting on our conversation, I realised how beautifully varied Guatemala is. For Chakira it was the calm of Lake Atitlán, for Charlie the scale of Tikal, for Lewis the sense of space and history high above the canopy and for me the colourful charm of Antigua. Each memory different, yet each one a reminder of how rich and rewarding this country can be.
