The History: The Jesuit Communities in the Iguaçu Region

The Jesuit missionaries established vibrant communities across South America, including parts of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and more. They created Reductions—settlements where native tribes were evangelised, educated, and respected. At their peak, over 140,000 indigenous people lived in these communities, thriving far from Spanish and Portuguese settlements.

However, in the 1620s, Portuguese slave traders threatened these peaceful communities. The Jesuits relocated to the Yabebirí River, founding San Ignacio Miní, Loreto, Santa María La Mayor, and Santa Ana, many of which are now restored and open to visitors.

The Jesuit system flourished until the 18th century, when ideological opposition led to their expulsion from both Spanish and Portuguese territories. The mission buildings slowly deteriorated as the native communities dispersed. Today, visitors can explore the fascinating ruins of these Jesuit missions and learn about their remarkable history.
