Sylvia Earle, an AE Expeditions small ship for Antarctic cruising
Named in honour of renowned marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle, this purpose-built expedition vessel reflects a legacy of ocean conservation and discovery. As the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and recognised by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet, Sylvia Earle’s influence is woven into the spirit of this ship.
Measuring 104 metres in length, The Sylvia Earle has been designed specifically for polar exploration. Its advanced X-Bow design cuts efficiently through the water, delivering a smoother and more comfortable journey, while a striking glass atrium at the bow enhances both natural light and forward-facing views.
With space for an average of just 130 guests, the ship offers one of the most intimate experiences in expedition cruising. This smaller capacity allows for a relaxed onboard atmosphere and greater access to remote landing sites. Alongside her sister ships, Greg Mortimer and Douglas Mawson, AE Expeditions delivers a consistently high standard of small-ship, expert-led exploration.
Staterooms are modern and well-appointed, each featuring a private en suite bathroom, flexible twin or double bed configurations, ample storage, and international power outlets. Daily cabin service is included, and selected cabins offer floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies for uninterrupted views.
Observation is central to the onboard experience, with a spacious 180-degree indoor lounge and a 360-degree open deck providing excellent vantage points. Dining is relaxed and sociable in the main restaurant, complemented by two welcoming bars and lounges with expansive windows.
Additional facilities include a well-stocked library, a dedicated mudroom for expedition gear, and a wellness centre with gym, sauna, and spa. The Sylvia Earle also features a dedicated Citizen Science Centre with microscopes, along with a heated saltwater swimming pool, adding an extra dimension to life onboard.
