Our frequently asked questions for holidays to Chile

When will I receive my final travel information?

4 weeks before departure, you will receive an email to notify you that your pre-departure letter has been uploaded which will include important information such as emergency contact information. At this point you will also be able to see your airline reference which will be added to your itinerary. 

You will receive all your pick-up times for tours and transfers locally when you arrive in-country, ensuring you have the most accurate and up-to-date information

Do we receive flight tickets before travel?

No, we do not provide paper tickets. The only thing you need to check-in and fly is the airline reference which is on your itinerary (look for reference made up of 6 letters and numbers). This reference can be used to check in online or at the airport along with your passport. You may have multiple airline references if you have several flights.  

Do I require any vouchers for tours or hotels?

No, you do not need any vouchers for tours or hotels. Just give your names and passports on check-in and to the guides.  

What can I use the My Routes App for?

The My Routes App stores your itinerary, travel documents, flight updates, recommendations, and local weather. Once downloaded, most features work offline. You can also message your Travel Specialist directly through the app.

Do I need a visa for Chile?

No. UK citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits to Chile of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay, and you may be asked to show onward travel on arrival.

Do I require anything else to visit Chile?

The Chilean immigration authorities will give you a tourist card (‘tarjeta de turismo’), an A5-sized white form. Keep it safe and give it to immigration when you leave the country. If you lose it, Chilean police investigations (PDI) allows you to request a copy online (choose ‘Duplicado de tarjeta de turismo’). You can also go to the nearest PDI office.

To enter Rapa Nui (Easter Island) you must:

  • Complete a Rapa Nui entry form
  • Show a return ticket
  • Show a reservation registered with SERNATUR, the national tourism service (select region ‘Valparaiso’ and comuna ‘Rapa Nui’ to refine your search for accommodation) or an invitation letter from the provincial delegation
Do I need to check in for my flights?

For your international flight we advise you to check-in online. Airlines open check-in between 24-48 hours before departure. For domestic flights, you can also check-in online or at the airport. To check-in to any flight, you need the airline reference which is added to your itinerary 4 weeks before departure.  

Can I pre-book my seats?

Seat selection policies vary depending on the airline and fare type. In most cases, you can pre-book your seats for a fee via the airline’s website once you have made the booking. Please contact your Travel Specialist for your airline reference if you wish to do this more than 4 weeks prior to departure. You can normally select seats for free at the point of check-in, usually 24-48 hours before departure.  

What is my luggage allowance?

For international flights, clients travelling in Economy are allowed 1 checked bag up to 23kgs which is included in the cost of your holiday, unless otherwise stated. For Premium and Business class clients, 2 pieces of checked luggage up to 32kgs are included unless otherwise stated. 

For domestic flights, 1 checked bag up to 23kgs is included.

Are there any health considerations before I travel?

Before travelling to Chile, it is sensible to ensure you are up to date with routine vaccinations and to have comprehensive travel insurance in place. If you are visiting higher altitude areas such as the Atacama Desert, allow time to acclimatise and stay well hydrated. For outdoor regions, sun protection and basic first aid supplies are also recommended.

What is the local currency and how should I pay for things?

The local currency in Chile is the Chilean peso (CLP). Cards are widely accepted in cities, hotels and restaurants, and contactless payment is common. Cash is useful for small purchases and in more remote areas, so carrying a modest amount of pesos is recommended.

How much should I tip?

In Chile, tipping is straightforward and modest.

In restaurants, a 10% tip is customary and is often suggested on the bill. In cafés and bars, rounding up is fine. Tipping taxi drivers is not expected, but for private guides and drivers, a small tip at the end of the service is appreciated.

What is the time difference between the UK and Chile?

Chile is usually 4 to 5 hours behind the UK, depending on the time of year.

  • When the UK is on GMT, Chile is typically 4 hours behind.

  • When the UK is on British Summer Time, Chile is usually 5 hours behind.

What should I pack for Chile?

For Chile, pack layered clothing to suit changing climates, especially if travelling between regions. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, along with a warm jacket, sun protection, and a light waterproof. Bring a travel adaptor, any personal medication, and a small day bag for excursions.

What adaptor do I need for Chile?

Argentina primarily uses Type I plugs, which are the national standard throughout the country. It has three flat pins in a V shape, with grounding. 

How reliable is mobile and WIFI coverage?

Most hotels, cafés and restaurants offer good WIFI. Coverage can be limited in remote areas. Check roaming costs with your mobile provider before travel.  

Are there any local customs I should be aware of?

Chileans tend to greet with a single kiss on the right cheek in social settings, although a handshake is common in more formal situations. People are generally polite and understated, and personal space is slightly closer than in the UK but more reserved than in Argentina. Punctuality is appreciated for business and organised activities, while social occasions are often more relaxed. Sharing food or drinks, particularly wine, is a warm gesture and a common way to socialise with friends and family.

Will I need to pay any local taxes?

In Chile, you may need to pay a small local tax at some hotels, usually collected at check in or check out. In many cases, foreign visitors can be exempt from Chilean VAT on accommodation if they present their passport and entry details and the hotel takes payment in USD. For day to day spending such as meals, shopping and tours, taxes are normally already included in the price, and you will not usually see a separate local charge.

How do I get around during my holiday?

All transfers listed on your itinerary are included in the cost of the holiday. If you wish to take a taxi, we recommend taking official taxis booked by your hotel.  

Can I make changes to my booking?

Changes may be possible, but fees or fare differences could apply. Contact your travel specialist as soon as possible to discuss your options.  

Where will my representative meet me on arrival?

If you are arriving at the airport, please proceed to the arrivals hall where your driver will be waiting with a Latin Routes sign displaying your name. If you cannot locate your driver, remain in the arrivals hall and call the emergency contact number provided in your final travel itinerary.  

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Drink only bottled or purified water. A reusable bottle is useful for refill stations available in many hotels and restaurants. Be cautious with uncooked foods in more rural areas.  

Will I encounter high altitude during my trip?

Yes, some parts of Chile are at high altitude, particularly in the Atacama Desert and the Andes. Places such as San Pedro de Atacama sit at around 2,400 metres, and some excursions go higher. Most travellers adjust well by taking things slowly, staying hydrated and allowing time to acclimatise. Many other regions of Chile, including Santiago, wine regions and Patagonia, are at much lower altitude.

How safe is it to travel around Chile?

Chile is generally straightforward to travel around, particularly on a well planned itinerary. In Santiago and other larger cities, take sensible precautions: keep phones and valuables out of sight in busy areas, use your hotel safe, and use reputable taxis or private transfers arranged through your hotel or your travel team, especially at night. In places like Valparaíso, stay alert in crowded viewpoints and markets where opportunistic theft can happen.

In regions such as Patagonia and the Atacama, the main considerations are practical rather than security related. Distances are long, weather can change quickly, and some areas have limited mobile signal. If I am hiring a car, do I need an International Driving Permit for car hire?

Minimum rental age of 22 years. A valid driving licence is required and must remain valid for at least one month after the end of the rental. The licence must be issued in the Latin alphabet. If not, an International Driving Permit must be presented alongside the original licence. Electronic licences, certified copies and temporary licences are not accepted in Chile.

A credit card is also required as a guarantee, the credit card holder must be present to sign documentation.
A cross border permit is necessary to take a vehicle into Argentina and must be requested at least seven working days in advance.

Are there any restrictions on bringing food into Chile?

Yes, Chile has some of the strictest food‑import rules in the world due to its agricultural protection laws.

You must declare ALL food items on arrival.

Prohibited or restricted items include:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Meat and meat products
  • Dairy products
  • Seeds, nuts, grains, and honey
  • Unprocessed plant materials
  • Failure to declare food can result in heavy fines.
  • Commercially packaged, sealed snacks may be allowed if declared, but inspectors make the final decision.

Our top tip for holidays to Chile

Plan for big distances and pack for multiple climates. Chile is long and wonderfully diverse, and it’s common to experience mild coastal weather around Santiago and Valparaíso, dry desert heat in the Atacama, and cool, windy conditions in Patagonia all in one trip. The best way to stay comfortable (and make the most of every stop) is to pack versatile layers, including a light waterproof and something warm for evenings, especially in the south, even if you’re travelling in summer.
