Chile is a year-round destination, stretching from the Atacama Desert in the north to Patagonia in the south. Its diverse climate and landscapes mean the best time to visit depends on your interests, whether you’d like to hike and explore nature, drink wine in the vineyards or relax on beaches in the coastal regions. This guide breaks down when to go, based on weather, events and seasonal highlights so you can decide which month in Chile is perfect for you. Lets look at when is the best time to visit Chile?

Chile weather by month travel guide

January and February

Weather: Around 25-35°C in central Chile; cooler in Patagonia (10-20°C).

January and February are some of the most popular months to visit Chile due to the great weather that’s perfect for exploring, sunbathing and outdoor adventures. The warm weather and long days lend themselves to activities such as hiking in the Torres del Paine National Park or enjoying beach towns in the coastal regions, like Valparaiso. Make sure to book early during this high season to enjoy Chile in the peak of its summer months.

Events: The vibrant Tapati Rapa Nui festival on Easter Island is held during the first two weeks of February where you can experience traditional Polynesian culture, competitions and dance.

March and April

Weather: Milder temperatures of around 18-25°C in central Chile.

The start of autumn in Chile is a great time to visit if you’re looking for an experience with fewer tourists and stunning landscapes in the beautiful autumnal colours. Temperatures are expected to be cooler, but still wonderful for exploring destinations like the wine regions and vineyards where the grapes are harvested at this time of year. You can also expect clear skies that are perfect for stargazing in the Atacama Desert

Events: Vendimia is a grape harvest festival showcasing local wines and culinary delights across the months of March and April.

May

Weather: Cooler and wetter in central and southern Chile.

If you’re planning a trip to Chile in May, you’ll be greeted with the country’s transition into winter. Popular destinations are likely to be quiet and uncrowded around this time due to the colder weather and higher chances of rain. May is best for an off-season city break in Santiago or Valparaiso where you can explore museums and landmarks peacefully.

June, July and August

Weather: Temperatures in central Chile range from 5-15°C with snow in the Andes.

These months bring Chile into the full swing of the winter season with colder temperatures across the south. This would be the best time to visit Chile if you’re interested in snow sports, such as skiing and snowboarding in resorts around the wine region, like Valle Nevado, or simply want to enjoy the winter scenery and activities in areas like the Chilean Lake District. Don’t forget to pack lots of layers and bundle up at this time of year when visiting Chile.

September

Weather: Mild temperatures in the start of spring.

September in Chile offers pleasant weather that’s great for sightseeing as well as viewing blossoming landscapes and wildflowers. You’ll be able to hike as the weather continues to improve and still experience fewer crowds and tourists in popular destinations.

Events: Chile’s Independence Day (Fiestas Patrias) falls in September, where you can experience national celebrations, food, cueca dancing, and rodeos!

December

Weather: Expect 25-30°C in central Chile with great weather in Patagonia as well.

December is a lovely month for travel to Chile with dry and warm weather that’s perfect for exploring nature in the Lake District, mountains in the Austral Highway and coastal towns such as Valparaiso before the high season peaks. Days are longer, with many activities and adventures available during your time there.
