Argentina stretches from subtropical forests to Patagonian ice fields, creating one of the most diverse natural environments in Latin America. Travelling through the country reveals dramatic contrasts. Towering waterfalls thunder through rainforest, glaciers advance into turquoise lakes, and wind shaped deserts stretch towards the Andes.  Let's explore Most spectacular natural landscapes of Argentina.

For travellers drawn to wide open spaces and powerful scenery, Argentina offers extraordinary variety. These five landscapes capture the scale and beauty that make the country such a compelling destination.

1. Iguazú falls and the Atlantic rainforest

Iguazú falls

On the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazú Falls forms one of the most impressive waterfall systems in the world. Nearly 300 cascades plunge through dense Atlantic rainforest, creating a constant roar and clouds of mist that rise above the jungle canopy.

Walking trails and elevated walkways allow visitors to experience the falls from multiple angles. The highlight is the Garganta del Diablo, or Devil’s Throat, where water crashes through a vast horseshoe shaped chasm.

The surrounding national park protects rich biodiversity. Coatis roam the pathways, toucans move through the treetops, and colourful butterflies drift through the humid forest air.

2. Perito Moreno glacier, Los Glaciares national park

Deep in southern Patagonia, Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. Its immense wall of ice stretches across Lago Argentino, rising more than 70 metres above the water.

Visitors often hear the glacier before they see it. Ice fractures and collapses into the lake with thunderous cracks, sending waves across the water.

A network of viewing platforms offers different perspectives across the glacier’s blue crevasses and towering ice face. Boat excursions and guided ice walks allow travellers to experience the glacier up close within the vast wilderness of Los Glaciares National Park.

3. The lakes and mountains of the lake district

Around Bariloche and Villa La Angostura, Argentina’s Lake District blends alpine scenery with Andean landscapes. Deep blue lakes sit beneath snow capped peaks, while forests of lenga and coihue trees cover the hillsides.

Nahuel Huapi National Park is the centre of this region. Scenic drives, walking trails and boat journeys reveal quiet bays, island forests and sweeping mountain views.

During summer the area is ideal for hiking, kayaking and wildlife watching. In winter, Cerro Catedral becomes one of South America’s leading ski destinations.

4. Quebrada de Humahuaca

Quebrada de Humahuaca

In the far north of Argentina, the Quebrada de Humahuaca valley offers a very different landscape. This high altitude desert corridor runs for over 150 kilometres through the province of Jujuy, framed by vividly coloured mountains.

Mineral rich rock formations create layered hills in shades of red, orange, purple and green. The most famous example is the Hill of Seven Colours near the village of Purmamarca.

The valley also carries deep cultural significance. Ancient trade routes once passed through here, and today small Andean villages preserve indigenous traditions, music and crafts.

5. The Iberá wetlands

The Iberá wetlands

One of the most important wildlife areas in Argentina lies in the northeast of the country. The Iberá wetlands form a vast network of lagoons, marshes and floating islands, creating a sanctuary for wildlife.

Capybaras graze along the water’s edge, caimans bask in the sun, and hundreds of bird species thrive in the wetlands. Conservation projects have successfully reintroduced species such as giant anteaters and jaguars.

Exploring Iberá often involves boat journeys through quiet channels and wildlife walks across grasslands. The pace is slow, allowing travellers to fully appreciate the sounds and movements of the ecosystem.
