Chile holidays are full of surprises. Before travelling there, many people picture Patagonia’s mountains or the Atacama Desert, but what often stays with travellers most are the things they never expected.
From the sheer scale of Torres del Paine and the unpredictable Patagonia weather to the silence of the Atacama Desert and the number of guanacos wandering beside the road, Chile constantly catches people off guard.
We asked the Latin Routes team to share the things nobody tells you before visiting Chile.
Nobody tells you how huge Chile feels
On a map, Chile looks long and narrow. In reality, travelling through the country feels like travelling through several completely different destinations.
Oliver explained: “Chile is one of the most rewarding countries in Latin America because every region feels completely different from the last.”During one trip, travellers can experience:
- Patagonia glaciers
- Atacama Desert landscapes
- Volcanoes and lakes
- Vineyards and wine lodges
- Colourful cities
- Remote islands
That contrast is one of the things that makes Chile holidays feel so memorable.

Nobody tells you how dramatic Patagonia weather really is
Everyone expects Patagonia to be windy, but the reality still surprises people.
Alex recalled: “You can experience sunshine, rain and huge winds all within a few hours.”That unpredictability quickly became part of the adventure for the team.
Alex also shared one particularly memorable moment from the Base of the Towers hike:
“The view at the top was stunning even though the wind literally blew my glasses off my face and into the lagoon at the top never to be seen again! Worth it!”
Oliver explained: “The weather completely transforms the landscapes throughout the day. It is part of what makes Patagonia feel so wild.”
Nobody tells you how big Torres del Paine actually is
Photos rarely prepare travellers for the scale of Patagonia.
Gaynor explained: “That first entry into Torres del Paine and seeing the mountains in the distance. They are much bigger than you expect.”Giuliano also reflected on his first experience in the national park: “Seeing the Paine Massif for the first time is unforgettable.”The landscapes feel enormous, especially when combined with the silence and open space surrounding them.
Nobody tells you how many animals you will see
Wildlife ended up being one of the biggest surprises during Chile holidays.
The team regularly spotted:
- Guanacos
- Condors
- Foxes
- Flamingos
- Rheas
Guanacos quickly became a favourite.
Whether standing on hillsides in Torres del Paine or wandering across the Patagonian plains, they seemed to appear everywhere.
Gaynor also remembered watching condors soaring above the mountains during one excursion.
Nobody tells you how peaceful the Atacama Desert feels
The Atacama Desert is famous for salt flats and dramatic landscapes, but what surprised the team most was the atmosphere.
Gaynor remembered: “Watching the sun rise over the Andes was just incredible. The colours came to life once the sun hit the valley.”Alex described Moon Valley simply as: “Other worldly.”The silence, huge skies and open desert landscapes create a feeling of complete stillness that many travellers do not expect.
Nobody tells you Chile can feel luxurious and adventurous at the same time
Before travelling to Chile, many people assume Patagonia is purely for hikers and adventure travellers.
In reality, Chile holidays can combine adventure with exceptional accommodation and food experiences.
Oliver explained: “Chile works incredibly well for travellers wanting both adventure and comfort. You can spend the day exploring glaciers or hiking before returning to a luxury lodge overlooking the mountains.”The team especially loved:
- Patagonia lodges with panoramic views
- Wine lodges near Santiago
- Boutique hotels in San Pedro de Atacama
- Scenic estancia stays

Nobody tells you how different Easter Island feels
Easter Island became one of the biggest surprises for Gaynor.
“The Moai statues are much larger than you expect and have that air of mystery around them.”
She also loved how different the island felt compared with mainland Chile.
“Sometimes it felt like being in remote Devon or Cornwall with rolling hills and wild horses.”
The island’s Polynesian culture and volcanic scenery create a completely different atmosphere from the rest of Chile.

Nobody tells you the slow moments become the best memories
Interestingly, many of the team’s favourite memories were not famous viewpoints or major excursions.
Instead, they remembered:
- Watching the weather change from a lodge window
- Long drives through Patagonia
- Stargazing in the Atacama Desert
- Spotting wildlife unexpectedly beside the road
- Quiet moments beside glacier lakes
- Long meals after a day exploring
Oliver believes this is why Chile holidays work best at a slower pace.
“Chile rewards travellers who slow down and properly experience each region rather than rushing between destinations.”
Nobody tells you how hard it is to leave
One thing the whole team agreed on was how much Chile stays with you afterwards.
The landscapes, wildlife and sense of scale create the kind of trip people continue talking about long after they return home.
From Patagonia’s mountains and glaciers to the silence of the Atacama Desert, Chile holidays constantly surprise travellers in ways they never expect.
