Travelling to Latin America as a family can feel like a big step, especially when it is your first time visiting the region with children. Questions around pace, practicality and how little ones will respond to a new culture often sit alongside the excitement of planning something special when it comes to family travel.

For Latin Routes co-founder Jess Dennison, a family trip to Costa Rica was the moment those doubts were put firmly to rest. Having travelled widely across Latin America before becoming a parent, she discovered that experiencing the region with children revealed a different side altogether. One defined by warm welcomes, patient local guides and wildlife encounters that instantly captured young imaginations.

What stood out most was just how naturally family friendly Latin America felt. From immersive nature experiences to thoughtfully paced itineraries, it proved to be a place where travel with children was not only manageable, but deeply rewarding. These are the family travel tips Jess took from that experience, shaped by real journeys and designed to help other families feel confident about exploring Latin America together.

1. Plan your trip around the seasons

Latin America covers an enormous range of climates, so timing matters, especially when travelling with children. Choosing the right season can mean smoother travel days, calmer weather and more comfortable sightseeing.

Costa Rica is a wonderful example for families. Travelling during the drier months made exploring rainforests and beaches far easier, and the country felt exceptionally well set up for family travel. It is welcoming, easy to navigate, widely English speaking and offers high standards across hotels, restaurants and excursions. Peru, Brazil and Argentina also work beautifully for families when planned at the right time of year.

2. Keep travel distances realistic

One of the biggest lessons we learned was not to try and do too much. Distances can be longer than they look on a map, so slowing the pace makes a huge difference. Spending several nights in each place allowed us to settle in, unpack properly and enjoy experiences without rushing.

Private transfers were invaluable. They made travel days comfortable, flexible and stress free, and allowed us to stop when needed. With snacks, games and a bit of imagination, the children actually started to look forward to travel days as part of the adventure.

3. Balance adventure with downtime

Latin America is packed with exciting experiences for families. Ziplining through the rainforest, wildlife walks, river activities and canopy bridges all deliver that sense of adventure children love. That said, downtime is just as important.

We found our rhythm by mixing active mornings with relaxed afternoons. Pool time, beach visits and quiet evenings helped everyone recharge, and often became some of our favourite moments together. A well balanced itinerary keeps energy levels high and meltdowns to a minimum.

4. Choose accommodation that truly understands families

Family friendly accommodation goes far beyond simply allowing children. The best places we stayed offered connecting rooms, pools, flexible meal times and staff who genuinely enjoyed engaging with younger guests.

Some of our highlights included a cloud forest lodge that ran hands on chocolate making workshops, and a beach hotel where guides took the children on gentle nature walks. These thoughtful touches transformed our stays into experiences the children still talk about.

5. Involve children in every part of the journey

Children are naturally curious, and Latin America gives them endless opportunities to learn through experience. Ours loved trying local food, picking up Spanish words and listening to guides explain wildlife with real passion.

Hands on activities are especially powerful. Making tortillas in Guatemala, spotting howler monkeys in Costa Rica or learning about conservation directly from local experts helps children feel connected to the places they visit rather than just passing through.

6. Create a travel scrapbook together

One of the best decisions we made was starting a travel scrapbook for each child. Armed with stickers, notebooks and a small instant camera, they documented the trip in their own way.

They collected tickets, pressed leaves, took photos and added notes along the way. It kept them engaged during longer journeys and gave them a keepsake they still treasure. Seeing the trip through their eyes was a joy for us too.

7. Pack for variety

Latin America is full of contrasts, often within the same itinerary. One day you might be in the rainforest, the next on the coast. Light layers, sun protection and comfortable footwear are essential.

A small daypack and reusable water bottle quickly became daily essentials, and being prepared for sudden changes in weather made everything feel easier and more relaxed.

8. Experience local life at a gentle pace

Some of the most meaningful moments came when we slowed right down. Wandering through markets, stopping for ice cream, listening to music in the main square or chatting with local families created memories that felt authentic and unforced.

Latin America is vibrant and full of life, but it rewards families who take the time to absorb it without rushing from one highlight to the next.

9. Work with family travel specialists

Travelling with children comes with extra logistics, and having experts handle the planning makes an enormous difference. Tailor made family itineraries ensure smooth transfers, child friendly hotels and guides who understand how to engage younger travellers.

It allows parents to relax, knowing every detail has been thought through, and focus on what really matters, spending quality time together.

Travelling together builds more than memories

Our family trip to Costa Rica reminded me that travel is about far more than ticking destinations off a list. It is about shared experiences, confidence building moments and seeing the world through fresh eyes.

From rainforest walks to quiet beach afternoons, every day brought laughter, learning and connection. Family travel to Latin America has a way of staying with you long after you return home.
