Explore the Enchanting Heritage of the Guianas
This 14 day journey offers a thoughtful introduction to three neighbouring countries whose stories are shaped by rivers, rainforest and a blend of Caribbean and European influences. Travelling through Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, you will explore places where heritage, daily life and remarkable landscapes come together in ways that feel distinct from elsewhere in Latin America.
Your time begins in Georgetown, Guyana’s lively capital. Four nights here allow you to settle into the rhythm of the city while enjoying a curated mix of experiences. A scenic flight takes you over Kaieteur Falls, and there is the option to join a guided birding excursion. You will also discover the city’s food and traditions through a secret garden cooking class, drumming workshop and a full day dedicated to emancipation history. A visit to the Mahaica River and a tour of Georgetown complete your stay.
In Suriname, three nights in Paramaribo introduce its UNESCO listed architecture, river front setting and layered past. A sunset dolphin cruise, a visit to Joden Savanne and time in the Commewijne district, including Frederiksdorp, offer a deeper look at the country’s cultural landscape.
French Guiana provides a striking finale, from the former transportation camp and the evocative Salvation Islands to the modern energy of the Space Centre and the city of Cayenne.

History & Cultures of the Guianas 14-day Itinerary
Days 1-5 UK - Georgetown, Guyana
Take an afternoon flight to Amsterdam where you will spend the night at a comfortable and convenient airport hotel. The next day fly to Georgetown, Guyana and transfer to Cara Lodge, a hotel with a long romantic history that has hosted many dignitaries over the years, including King Charles, for a four-night stay. The next day brings a spectacular day trip to the utterly beautiful Kaieteur Falls. At over five times the height of Niagara Falls, Kaieteur is the world’s highest free-falling waterfall, and the surrounding tropical rainforest only adds to its tranquillity.
Embark on a profound, journey into the heart of Guyana's African-Guyanese heritage, tracing the inspiring story of emancipation and the establishment of freedom villages, an experience which concludes at the Secret Garden for a hands-on cultural experience focused on delicious cuisine and vibrant African drumbeats.
Your final day in Georgetown will see you depart the city early for the Mahaica River, an excellent riverfront ecosystem inhabited by flocks of egrets, herons, ibis, various marsh tyrants, and Guyana’s national bird, the Hoatzin.

Days 6-8 Paramaribo, Suriname
Fly to Paramaribo for a three-night stay. Explore the UNESCO-listed city, visiting Fort Zeelandia, Independence Square, and colonial streets, before enjoying a sunset dolphin river cruise.
The next morning travel approximately 70 KM to the south of Paramaribo to the historic Jewish settlement of Jodensavanne. Settled around 1650 the village is home to the oldest synagogue of the Americas.
Your final day in Paramaribo will see you travel through the outskirts of Paramaribo to Lelydorp to visit the local market, then continue to Santigron, a Saramaccan Maroon village near the Saramacca River. A guided walk introduces the community’s traditions, daily life and strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Day 9 Commewijne District, Suriname
Transfer to the Commewijne district for your stay at Frederiksdorp, a former coffee and cocoa plantation established in the eighteenth century. Once worked by enslaved people and later by Javanese and Hindustani labourers, the estate still carries traces of its past, from the old commissioner’s house to the former prison cells. Today it is a peaceful riverside retreat where you can explore the historic grounds, wander through nearby villages and head out with your guide to look for dolphins that are often seen in these waters.

Days 10-11 Kourou, French Guiana
Explore the former plantation district surrounding Frederiksdorp, travelling past old estates, canals and small communities, your guide shares the stories, cultures and shifting fortunes that shaped this once‑thriving region. After lunch on the estate, you continue by boat and road to Albina, where a short canoe crossing over the Maroni River brings you into French Guiana. On arrival in St Laurent du Maroni, you visit the well‑preserved Camp de la Transportation, a powerful reminder of the area’s penal history, before continuing to Kourou for the night.
The following morning begins with an early transfer to the dock for your journey to the Salvation Islands. Often collectively referred to as Devil’s Island, this trio of islands sits just off the coast and played a central role in French colonial history. You sail first to Île Royale, home to the most extensive remains, including officers’ quarters, a church and former administrative buildings. A guided walk reveals the stories of prisoners once held here, as well as the island’s quieter corners, from shaded paths to viewpoints over the sea. After time to explore at your own pace, return to Kourou by catamaran for a relaxed evening.

Day 12 Cayenne, French Guiana
Begin the day with a visit to the Guiana Space Centre, one of the most important launch sites in the world. A guided tour introduces the scale of the facility, from assembly buildings to launch pads, offering a rare insight into the engineering and ambition behind Europe’s space programme. You then explore the Guyaspace Expérience, an engaging museum that brings the history of space exploration to life through interactive exhibits, full‑scale models and stories of the Ariane, Soyuz and Vega missions that have lifted off from this coastline. It is a fascinating contrast to the surrounding rainforest and a reminder of French Guiana’s unique role in global science.
After the visit, continue to Cayenne, the cultural and administrative heart of French Guiana. A guided tour reveals the city’s creole character, from the hilltop Fort Cépérou to leafy squares, historic buildings and the lively central streets. Together, these experiences offer a thoughtful look at the region’s past and present, balancing frontier history with modern innovation in a way that feels distinctly Guianese.

Days 13-14 Cayenne - UK
You will be transferred to Cayenne Airport for your onward flight, and land back in the UK the next day.
