In Montevideo, the capital, you can eat asado and afterwards burn some calories at one of the various milongas (the local name for a tango venue), as Montevideo has been granted a UNESCO title of 'intangible cultural heritage' for its rich tango roots. You can drink some Tannat wine while learning more about the Italian, Spanish and French settlers who introduced the wine culture here. You can – and should – visit the lovely city of Colonia del Sacramento, one of the top tourist attractions nowadays, which was founded back in 1860 by Portuguese colonisers and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. When you feel like you have enough of culture and history, and all you want to do is lie down under the sun, Uruguay also offers great seaside option such as; the glamorous Jose Ignacio filled with secret beaches and private islands, or the sporty Punta del Diablo. These are both great for relaxation and outdoor-related activities such as surfing or hiking. You can also visit Cabo Polonio, the wildest spot in the country and a protected area since 2009, or, acquire some gaucho skills in a 'estancia' where you will be able to ride horses, learn some cattle herding, or simply, enjoy the pleasures of simple life.
