Depart UK for Quito and discover Ecuador’s old-worldly capital with its colonial buildings, indigenous inhabitants and traditional culture. Take a guided walking tour of the historical centre to understand the importance of Quito’s history and lasting cultural practices.
This morning one of our guides will assist you in picking up your hire-car in Quito and then it’s off on an incredible journey by road through the Ecuadorian countryside. As you drive into the Avenue of the Volcanoes you will be surrounded by the towering peaks and dramatic landscapes.
Spend your first day exploring the beautiful Cotopaxi National Park and your first overnight stay is nearby. The next day it’s on to the must-see crater of Quilotoa and its brightly coloured lagoon. Afterwards you will spend 2 nights in the lush green Baños valley, where you can visit its incredible waterfalls or try a range of optional adventure activities such as mountain biking or river rafting.
Finally, it’s on to Riobamba for 1 night where you will enjoy a ride on the thrilling Devil’s Nose Train. The train offers spectacular views of the valley as it journeys back and forth along a wall of sheer rock. Don’t forget your camera!
Your route through the avenue of volcanoes finished in the pretty colonial town of Cuenca where you will spend two nights. You will have a full day to relax and enjoy the local sites at your own pace or perhaps visit one of the town’s museums or churches.
Today you will take the beautiful road to Guayaquil via the Las Cajas National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity for hiking and wildlife spotting. On arrival in Guayaquil check in to your hotel and you can spend the evening promenading on the bustling Malecon 2000, on the banks of the River Guayas.
A drive of just under two hours, takes you to Ecuador’s beautiful ‘Golden Coast’ outside the town of Santa Elena. Spend the next 3 nights soaking up the sun on or making a daytrip along the ‘Ruta del Sol’ to visit the sleepy fishing village of Puerto Lopez, famous for whale watching between the months of June and September.
Your self-drive ends with a short journey back to Guayaquil to drop-off your car and fly back to the UK, arriving on day 15.
