Brazil, News

Continuing with our Brazilian investigation this week, we’re here to give you the best inside tips and tricks on negotiating the bustling streets of Brazil. Travel. There are a couple of ways to get around the city other than hot-footing it. Taxis are a quick and easy way to get around. There are the equivalent of taxi ranks on most street corners, and often your hotel can provide you with numbers to book cabs that can pick you up from your door. Try and stick with registered taxi companies, but in general this shouldn’t be an issue. However, be aware of taxi drivers ‘taking you for a ride’ – it’s best to have an idea of where you’re going and how to get there. If taxis don’t sound appealing, then why not opt for the Metro. Fast, cheap and reliable, tickets should cost the equivalent of around $1.50. Rio can be a very busy…

However, South America can be a confusing place, full of seemingly impenetrable social mores. Here at Latin Routes, we’re experts in this area. Here are just a few words of advice to help your South American adventure go as smoothly as possible! As with much of South America, Brazilians are not shy – they have a real enthusiasm for life and aren’t afraid to express their opinions. This can sometimes mean you being interrupted, slapped on the back or given a friendly hug. To British people especially, this can seem daunting. However, once you relax and get into the swing of things, you won’t be disappointed. Brazilians are known for their hospitality – expect lunch to last two hours or more if you’re taken out by any locals. Furthermore,…

Chile, News

Last week, we investigated one aspect of Chilean culture that may have left you baffled – the food. This time, we’ll be having a look at some finer points of etiquette – use this knowledge to avoid being kicked out of a restaurant for inadvertently insulting the manager’s hair (among other things). As with the majority of South American cultures, Chileans are friendly, open and inviting. You should expect physical contact (hugging, kissing) which may take some getting used to if you are the kind of person to avoid eye contact on public transport at all costs (I.e. British). After a few awkward handshakes, the Chilean way of life will become second nature to you. Other than this, Chile is a very religious and traditional culture. If you are likely to come into contact with local Chileans, be aware that they are not necessarily as liberal as some Western countries….

Brazil, News, World Cup 2014

Tuesday night saw Roy Hodgson’s team triumph over Poland 2-0, securing their place in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The victory came as a relief for England fans, many of whom are well-versed in World Cup disappointment. The history footballing history between England and Poland made the win especially satisfying for fans, who no doubt had memories of being knocked out by Poland in previous years. The match itself was tense and fast-paced, leaving no room for error. After a shaky start Engladn began to regroup and string together some quick, decisive passes. They were rewarded for their efforts in the first half with a goal from star striker Wayne Rooney, who headed the ball past a confused-looking Szczesny. Despite questions being raised prior to the game about the level of support England would be afforded by the fans (amidst stories of huge numbers of Polish fans living in…

Brazil, News, World Cup 2014

With England’s final qualifier being played this evening against Poland, Roy Hodgson’s team will be hoping for a comfortable win to see them through to the World Cup. Although England have a history of World Cup misfires, they are currently sitting at the top of Group H alongside the Ukraine (both have won 5 of their 9 games).  However, England need to win this game to gain automatic qualification – either a draw or a loss could leave England at risk of not qualifying at all, as they would be forced into the playoffs for the final qualification spot in Group H. With up-and-coming contenders such as Montenegro and Poland, England will certainly be looking to avoid any ambiguity and come out with a strong win. In their last match, England drew 1-1 with rivals Poland, and since then have picked up a few injuries, leaving their team at less than full strength….

On his recent trip to Chile, Martin traveled back with Iberia. Find out what he thought of what he found on board. I think it’s fair to say that if you mention to someone you are flying with Iberia, you are generally greeted with either sympathy or wishes of luck! Not because of anything to do with Iberia’s safety record, but normally to do with Iberia’s service record. The airline has been sorting out several union issues over the last couple of years which resulted in walk outs of its staff and significant disruption to the travelling public. This seems to have now all be resolved, but even in times of calm the airline has a reputation for bad service, bad food and no seat back TV’s in economy, so why would you travel with them? Well the main reason is because Iberia flies to almost all major South American…
