Antarctica, News, Wildlife Week

Today is the last day of Latin Routes Wildlife Week! We’ve certainly learned a lot and we hope you have too. For our final destination, we are exploring one of the most fascinating places on earth, the Antarctic. The Antarctic is host to some of the most extreme conditions on Earth, and the evolutionary selection pressures on the species that reside there has resulted in some of the most fascinating adaptions and ecosystems in the world today. Famed for its harsh conditions, sprawling tundra and inhospitable landscape, the Antarctic is the home of a wide range of species, each of which is as interesting as the next. Remembering that polar bears only exist at the North Pole, the Antarctic’s most well-known resident is probably the Emperor Penguin. This beautiful animal resides exclusively in the Antarctic and has some very specialist adaptions – such as the ability to hold its breath…

It’s Day 4 of Latin Routes’ Wildlife Week, meaning we’ll be having a look at the wonders of the Amazon Rainforest. Check back tomorrow when we’ll be investigating the Antarctic… The Amazon has the most diverse range of species on the planet – it is estimated that up to 10% of the entire planet’s species exist in the Amazon rainforest. The scope and scale of this rainforest is unparalleled, since it comprises of over half of the natural rainforest left in the world today. It could certainly be said that there is no place on earth that is quite like the Amazon rainforest. The sheer scale of the rainforest is astonishing – it sits at 5,500,000 squares kilometres. Furthermore, research has shown that, per square kilometre, there could be as many as 1,000 different plant species. This kind of diversity is not just limited to plant matter, however, as the…

Patagonian Wildlife

Argentina, News, Wildlife Week

Patagonia is most widely known for its spectacular Torres Del Paine – three peaks of rock jutting out of the earth – which form one of the most spectacular vistas in the world. However, it is also a fantastic spot for spotting some rare animals. The Condor and the Puma are two animals native to Patagonia, along with the Huemul and Guanaco. Tours can be organised specifically to track certain wildlife, which can be exceptionally rewarding if you are a wildlife enthusiast, photographer or are just looking for an unforgettable experience. The Andean Condor is notable for a number of reasons – it has one of the largest wingspans of any bird (at 3.2 metres), surpassed only by a few species of Pelican and the Great Albatross. It is also one of the heaviest birds of prey at approximately 11kg, making it an impressive sight soaring above the Torres Del…

Peninsula Valdes is a peninsula off the East coast of Argentina. Approximately 3,500km2 in size, it is not only home to some unique wildlife, but is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is an important nature reserve. Although Peninsula Valdes is stunningly beautiful, the wildlife is certainly the main attraction. Whales, sea lions and Magellanic penguins all house themselves in and around the peninsula. Taking a boat out from the peninsula is an unforgettable experience and, if you’re a photographer, it affords you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to snap some otherwise elusive wildlife. The whales found in Peninsula Valdes are often Southern Right Whales, which can be up to 15 metres long and can weigh upwards of 45 tonnes! Even with their massive size, however, these animals are known to be playful and are often seen cavorting (diving in and out of the water). Southern Right Whales are unique in that they occasionally…
