However, South America can be a confusing place, full of seemingly impenetrable social mores. Here at Latin Routes, we’re experts in this area. Here are just a few words of advice to help your South American adventure go as smoothly as possible!

As with much of South America, Brazilians are not shy – they have a real enthusiasm for life and aren’t afraid to express their opinions. This can sometimes mean you being interrupted, slapped on the back or given a friendly hug. To British people especially, this can seem daunting. However, once you relax and get into the swing of things, you won’t be disappointed.

Brazilians are known for their hospitality – expect lunch to last two hours or more if you’re taken out by any locals. Furthermore, it is considered bad manners to use anything but a knife and fork and napkins should always be worn. Although most Brazilians are easy going, it is worth being polite and considerate in all social and business interactions.

It is common in Brazil to have a relaxed attitude towards time. Brazilians are often between 10 and 15 minutes late to meetings or social engagements – don’t be offended, rather, it is nothing but a small cultural idiosyncrasy.

Finally, avoid using the ‘OK’ sign with your finger and thumb – it is considered vulgar and rude. In general,Brazilians are accepting and friendly – respect and understanding will be rewarded with generosity and gratitude.
