Travel. There are a couple of ways to get around the city other than hot-footing it. Taxis are a quick and easy way to get around. There are the equivalent of taxi ranks on most street corners, and often your hotel can provide you with numbers to book cabs that can pick you up from your door. Try and stick with registered taxi companies, but in general this shouldn’t be an issue. However, be aware of taxi drivers ‘taking you for a ride’ – it’s best to have an idea of where you’re going and how to get there.

If taxis don’t sound appealing, then why not opt for the Metro. Fast, cheap and reliable, tickets should cost the equivalent of around $1.50. Rio can be a very busy city, so be prepared to get your elbows out and do a bit of good-natured jostling. Alternatively, other forms of public transport are equally viable – including Buses and private Coaches.

Food. With African and other South American influences, Brazilian food is hearty and delicious. Expect stews, cheese bread and a variety of slow-cooked meats. ‘Acaraje’ is a typical snack sold both in the street and made at home. It consists mainly of shrimp and black eyed peas, fried in a batter and served hot. This dish is a favourite of Ffion, but is also enjoyed elsewhere in the country. Alternatively, set fire to the rain with a traditional ‘Feijoada’ – a main course comprising of black beans and fresh pork or beef that has reduced many a Brazilian to tears of joy.

Running away from this, next week we’ll be getting in the festive spirit and donning our elf costumes for Christmas!
