We know that Rio is a serious hotspot for some of the world’s best beaches. However, some of the more well-known ones – the world-famous Copacabana in particular – can often get busy in the summer months.

So, with this in mind we bring you some of the lesser-known sandy gems of beautiful Brazil!

018Buzios

The closest of these to Rio itself is Buzios, located just up the coast along the Costa Verde. Home to a magnificent town, relaxed atmosphere and some stunning beaches, Buzios is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for ultimate relaxation. With over 20 beaches to choose from – each with crystal clear waters and beautiful white – there is far less of a risk of crowding, allowing you space to recline and enjoy your holiday to Brazil.

After soaking in the sun, check out the ‘Rua das Pedras’. This cobblestoned road is at the heart of the city, offering everything from nightlife and bars to restaurants and shops. Chez Michou and Satyricon, two of the classiest restaurants in Buzios, serve top-quality food year round. The former is known for its crepes and cocktails and the latter for its traditional, freshly-caught seafood dishes.

007Paraty

Located a little further up from Buzios, Paratay is another stunning area just waiting to be explored. In excess of 300 islands can be found in the surrounding bay – take a water taxi to whichever island catches your eye, spend the day there or see as many as possible and explore what the region has to offer! Paraty itself is a beautiful colonial town full of character – great if you’re interested in the local history and culture of Brazil. Furthermore, the centre boasts an eclectic mix of boutiques, cafés and restaurants to keep you entertained during the evening.

If you have time between exploring the stunning beaches and soaking in the rich culture of the area, consider walking the Gold Trail, constructed after the Gold rush in 1696 in order to connect Paraty to Diamantina.

DowntownIlha Grande

An almost unspoilt remnant of Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, Ilha Grande (‘Big Island’) is a paradise of forest and greenery. Home to a unique eco-system of lush, forest-covered hillsides and pristine beaches, Ilha Grande is an unspoiled idyll. Although it takes a car and boat journey to reach, the destination itself is more than worth it!

In addition to the stunning beaches, the island is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, housing some of the world’s most endangered species, such as the beautiful red-browned Amazon Parrot. Snorkelling is also available, with beautiful corals and sea life to be found just off the coast.
