Uruguay.  Home of the South American cowboy and mile upon mile of unspoilt coastline, this small but mighty country is well overdue recognition as an idyllic tourist destination.

Learn to ride gaucho style at an Estancia, wander around the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Colonia del Sacramento or catch some waves in Punto del Diablo.  Whatever you’re into, the rustic charms and warm hospitality of Uruguay will have you hooked.

Uruguay is not the biggest country in South America, and is often overlooked in favour of its better known neighbours. But invest some time in Uruguay and you will find rolling countryside, charming colonial towns and vibrant cities to explore!

It is very easy to combine Uruguay with Argentina and/or Brazil. A great starting point is the ancient town of Colonia. Aptly named for its colonial architecture, you can go for as little as a day, although we recommend at least staying overnight. Spend your time ambling around the pretty streets or enjoy a seafood lunch on the front.

Why not extend this and see the vibrant city of Montevideo? Here you will find an interesting city with plenty of attractions to see. You can then easily continue down the coast to the port city of Punta del Este with one of Uruguay's best beaches next door.

If you have more time then the countryside in Uruguay has a wealth of estancias and ranches where you can spend your days riding with the gauchos. It's a fantastic experience and you may feel like you have found a corner of South America all to yourself!

It’s easy for you to organise your perfect trip with Latin Routes.  With years of specialist experience in South American travel, we help you plan your dream activities and organise all the details. Leaving you to focus on enjoying your holiday.

All of our holidays to Uruguay are tailor-made around you. This means you can create a holiday that includes the places you want to see and the things that are important to you.

Ride horses on an Estancia

The South American cowboy, or gaucho, is an icon of rural Uruguay.  Why not spend some time at a traditional Estancia, immersing yourself in traditional Uruguayan culture and learning to ride at the same time?  Try a taste of yerba mate, a caffeinated, herbal drink no self respecting gaucho is ever seen without, and get into the cowboy spirit.

No matter what your skill level, this should be on your to do list.  With some of the best trained horses in the world and some incredible teachers, you’ll be riding like a pro in no time.

Chill on the Beach in Jose Ignacio

Uruguay’s coastline is indisputably one of its star attractions.  Head south from Montevideo to relax on the sandy white beaches at Jose Ignacio, a sleepy fishing village with more than its fair share of boutique restaurants and bars.  Popular with everyone from international celebrities to discerning locals, you’re sure to love the understated vibe and the excellent foody scene.

Sample the wines of the Canelones Department

If you’re a wine buff, it doesn’t get much better than a few days exploring the Canelones Department.  Take a tour of a family run vineyard, learn more about the wine making process or simply sit back and sample a bottle (or two!). Situated conveniently between Montevideo and Punta del Este, it couldn’t be easier to fit some time here into your itinerary.

Rocha Department

Whether you want to explore the stunning beaches of Santa Teresa National Park or just to relax on the beach front at Punta del Diablo, the Rocha Department has something for everyone.  Take on one of the many walking trails, discover the Spanish Fortaleza de Santa Teresa, or take a quick dip.  While you’re busy exploring, keep an eye out for capybaras.  These surprisingly cute animals are actually the world’s biggest rodent and can be seen around the National Park.

Not forgetting that some of the best surf in the world can be found on this stretch of Uruguayan coast.  While you’re in the area, so why not rent a board or book a lesson?  This is the perfect place to give it a go!

Cabo Polonio

If it’s adventure that you’re after, the remote hamlet of Cabo Polonio is waiting!  Take a dune buggy to reach this remote hamlet, which has no roads and where electricity is almost totally absent. Stay the night to see the restaurants, which have a surprisingly delicious and varied array of food for such a remote location, lighting up with candles and water bottle lanterns. For those who didn’t spend too much time in the bar the previous night, an early wake up will be greatly rewarded by a magnificent sunrise over the beach.

If you don’t fancy staying the night, why not visit for the day.  It’s worth it to get up close to the resident colony of seals and get a taste of the laid back way of life here. It’s sure to be something you’ll remember.

Montevideo

With the beach on one side and the city centre on the other, it’s easy to combine a vibrant, cosmopolitan scene with some rest and relaxation in Montevideo.  Spend an evening in one of the buzzy tango bars, where history, culture and a great time meet.  Wander around the historical old city, admiring the colonial architecture and stopping off for the occasional coffee.  Or, if museums are your thing, there are plenty of those to choose from too. It’s all here!

Punta Del Este / Jose Ignacio

Heading to the bright lights of beachfront town Punta del Este is a must for the more refined traveller, with a huge range of high end bars and restaurants to choose from.  This is Uruguay’s answer to Miami: incredible nightlife, glitzy hotels and gorgeous stretches of white sand.  For a more bohemian vibe, try Jose Ignacio, where an eclectic mix of establishments line the unpaved streets.

Colonia del Sacremento

Colonia del Sacramento is the first stop for those arriving in Uruguay by ferry from Argentina.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this small but lively town is typified by quaint cobbled streets, faded shutters and a couple of excellent ice cream shops.  Shop for handmade souvenirs, climb the lighthouse for panoramic views or sit along the edge of the historic city to watch the sun go down.  A great introduction to a wonderful country.

Rocha – Punta del Diablo

For the perfect combination of excellent nightlife and relaxing beaches, head to Punta del Diablo.  A favourite with local students and tourists alike, you won’t be disappointed by the sweeping beaches and electric atmosphere.

For a true party vibe, head here during Uruguay Spring Break (January), when the population of the town sky rockets. The friendly locals are quick to welcome tourists into their parties, making this an experience not to be missed.
