Barrios of Buenos AiresAs Buenos Aires is such a big and densely-populated city, it is no surprise that there is a huge cultural divergence between different areas of the city (otherwise known as ‘Barrios’). Here we’ll explore just a few of the better known ones to give you a taste of what’s on offer. Recoleta is a district in the North East of Buenos Aires. It is known for its grand buildings, beautiful open spaces and fascinating museums, giving an insight into the rich history surrounding the area. Recoleta is sometimes referred to as ‘Little Paris’ due to the influence of French architecture and design on the buildings and boulevards.
Palermo Soho is renowned as the most vibrant Barrio in Buenos Aires. Filled with bars, cafés and restaurants which dot the cobblestoned streets, Palermo Soho is also home to some of the city’s quirkier shops, fashionable restaurants and a lively weekend market hosted in the famous Plaza Serrano. As the sun goes down, the Barrio lights up with revellers hitting some of the trendier bars and clubs until the early hours. The area is also excellent for shopping opportunities, from high-class boutiques to more tradition, bohemian styles.
Finally, be sure not to miss Puerto Madero. An up-and-coming area of Buenos Aires, Puerto Madero is home to the more sophisticated and upscale restaurants and accommodation. Find some of the better hotels here, along with the beautiful Punte de la Mujer bridge, lit up spectacularly at night. It is worth checking out the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur which is a beautiful ecological reserve in Puerto Madero, offering plenty of hiking and biking trails, the chance to see a large collection of wild birds such as flamingos and parakeets, as well as some reptiles like river turtles.
