Since we’re spending the week appreciating the fantastic natural beauty that South America has to offer, today we’ll be focusing on one of our favourite destinations – the Ibera Wetlands.

A wildlife paradise in central Argentina, this huge collection of swamps and bogs doesn’t sound too appealing at first. However, once you delve deeper you find one of the largest nature reserves on Earth, second only to the Pantanal in Brazil. A protected area, access to the Ibera Wetlands is limited because of the strong focus on preserving the fantastic biodiversity. Home to over 300 species of bird, the Ibera Wetlands are a haven for rare wildlife and a paradise for birdwatchers and nature-lovers alike.

And where better to stay than the Irupe Lodge – located in the heart of the nature reserve in a town called Carlos Pelligrini, the lodge is beautifully isolated – perfect for escaping the trials and tribulation of city life. Offering two categories of room – the standard and the superior – the Irupe Lodge provides its guests with a sense of luxury combined with an ecologically friendly approach. Featuring two living rooms, both of which have views of the nearby lake, a lakeside pool and open fireplace, the Irupe Lodge is the ideal place to relax after a long day of wildlife spotting.

The Lodge sits facing a lovely park and lake, immersed amongst the wildlife. From the main house a 20 metre wooden bridge connects it to the lake and it is often home to playing capybara families. The jetty is also the starting point for boat safaris which the lodge runs both during the day and night to explore the surrounding area and spot wildlife. Other activites organised by the lodge include walks, bird spotting excursions and visits to local attractions. All activities are accompanied by an experienced member of the Irupe Lodge team who gives a fascinating insight to the ecosystem, as well as being very experienced in getting to the right place to spot the best wildlife.
