As we’re focusing on luxury travel experiences this week, what better place to investigate the beautiful continent of Antarctica? Among many reasons to visit this spectacular place is its exclusivity – certainly, a trip to Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whilst you’re out there drifting between icebergs, you can almost be certain that you are the only people within hundreds and hundreds of miles. This sense of peace and serenity is something that you can’t get anywhere else in the world. Furthermore, Antarctica affords you opportunities to do things that very few people on Earth have done before – such as camping on the ice itself, investigating penguin colonies and exploring the fields of icebergs in a zodiac boat.

For those travel fanatics for whom 6 continents is not enough, Antarctica represents the final challenge. An unexplored, uninhabitable wilderness that holds not only some of the most beautiful vistas on Earth, but also an almost unparalleled range of wildlife – much of which is native only to Antarctica. The intricacies of these species’ evolution, including the bird and sea life, can be explained in detail by the on-board experts. These academics, highly training in spotting wildlife and the biological sciences, will not only be able to tell you all you might want to know about the wildlife on offer, but also run regular talks and lectures to help you gain a finer appreciation for what you’ll be seeing. The Wandering Albatross, for example, is spectacular to see, with its’ wingspan of up to 3.5m (the largest of any living bird), but it is also fascinating to know it spends 75% of its life in flight. Typically only landing to breed and sleep, the bird is able to glide for over 20m horizontally, whilst dropping just 1m vertically. This enables it to glide over the water in search of food without flapping its wings.

Often, when thinking of a trip to Antarctica, one will assume that it will be infeasibly expensive. However, we work with some of the top companies in the business to bring you the best possible prices. For this season (2013/14), G Adventures are offering 20% off their ‘Antarctic and the Weddell Sea’ cruise, along with 15% off their 2014/15 cruises in categories 3-5. Furthermore, Hurtigruten (another leading Antarctic cruise operator) are offering an astonishing 25% off their 2014/15 cruises on all of their categories! With Antarctic Cruises, it is always better to book earlier rather than later. Check out our website for a full list of prices and cruise operators.
