South America has a sterling reputation not only for some of the best golfers in the world, but also some of the most spectacular courses. Here are the 5 best golf courses there are:

Chapelco, Argentina

A creation of Jack Nicklaus, this stunning golf course is simply unique. Not only is the course itself a masterpiece of flowing fairways and expertly positioned bunkers, but it also holds a challenge for even for the most experienced of players. However, this is not to say that amateurs will take nothing from the Chapelco – it is set against a beautiful backdrop with the Andes framing the skyline. This is especially beautiful in the evening when the last of sun’s rays provide an incredible red glow over your last round of the day. Once you’ve finished your game, you could stroll back to the on-site 5* accommodation in the form of the LOI Suites Chapelco. Few hotels can match the combination of luxury and stunning natural beauty that the LOI Suites Chapelco provide.

Jockey Club (Red), Argentina

Initially designed by Alister McKenzie, both the Red and the Blue courses at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires are exceptionally well-renowned. However, the Red course played host to the Golf World Cup in 1970, so it is imbued with a sense of history that really shines through. Follow in the footsteps of some golfing legends as you play a round or two. The advantage of being in Buenos Aires is your proximity to some fantastic 5* hotels, such as the Alvear Art Hotel, Buenos Aires. An excellent choice for all types of player.

Club de Golf Los Leones, Chile

Formed in Santiago in 1910 by 8 friends, Club de Golf Los Leones is nothing short of an institution. One of the most exclusive golf courses in Chile, it affords spectacular views of both Santiago and the Andean mountain range as well as attracting some well-known local celebrities. Host to the prominent Chile Open in 2006, this attracted international renown. The tournament was won by Mark Tullo, a regular club member and resident of Santiago. As with Buenos Aires, being in Santiago drastically widens your options when considering hotels to stay in, with numerous 5* hotels being within reasonable driving distance, such as the Casa Bueras, Santiago.

Olivos Golf Club, Buenos Aires

Founded in 1926 by thirty local players in Buenos Aires looking to introduce to the sport to a wider range of people, the Olivos Golf Club, Buenos Aires has an exciting and vivid history. It faced relocation due to urban expansion in the 1950s, but has since thrived in its new location, now drawing people from all over the world – some now consider it one of the best golf clubs in South America. It features 27 holes, framed by some stunning scenery – undulating hills, lakes and trees all contribute towards the peaceful environment. Another excellent choice for amateurs and experts alike.

Pilar Golf Club, Buenos Aires

A links course just outside Buenos Aires, the Pilar Golf Club Buenos Aires is not only an outstanding golf course, but also gives you a sense of seclusion without being too far from central Buenos Aires. The course itself is of particular note, having a special drainage system to help remove excess and standing water after heavy rain – allowing play to continue well before many other courses. Furthermore, it features a practice area including a driving range, putting and pitching greens and various other facilities such as a pro shop and swimming pool. An outstanding, all-round course.
