After arriving at El Dorado airport in Bogota you will be transferred to the hotel.
After breakfast, you will start your Colombia holiday with a half day tour of the historic centre of Bogota known as La Candelaria. This historic hamlet is rich in architectural and cultural heritage, which means that you will be able to view beautiful stately homes and large colonial buildings that feature impressive iron windows, thick and sturdy wooden doors, balconies and internal beautiful patios with hidden gardens. On this tour, you will also visit Plaza de Bolivar (originally called Plaza Mayor) where you will see the statue of the great Libertador, Simon Bolivar. You will get the chance to pop by The Cathedral, on the eastern side of the plaza, as well as view the Palacio da Justicia, The Mayor's offices 'Edificio Lievano', the oldest school in the country 'San Bartolome' and finally, Casa de Los Comuneros. The visit continues with Museo Botero, a colonial house filled with works of art done and donated by Fernando Botero, as well as well as some pieces from his personal collection (Picasso, Renoir, Dali Matisse, Monet and Giacometti).
You will be transferred to the airport and take a flight to Pereira. Once there you will be transferred to the hotel for check-in and overnight stay.
You will spend your morning in Valle de Cocora which is located in the central mountains of Quindio which is part of the Parque Nacional de Los Nevados and is ideal if you want to visit the “Quindian wax palm” (Ceroxylon quincense), Colombia's national tree. Here you can admire the beauty of this incredibly long trees (they can reach up to 60 metres), as well as a wide variety of different birds, particularly some types of hummingbirds, the orejíamarillo, or the palm parrot which is an endangered species. Once at the Valley, you can choose between hiking or horse riding towards the cloud forest, where you will be marvelled at the vast biodiversity of flora and fauna. On your way back learn why the indigenous people worshipped the wax palm trees as you walk along an ecological pathway which will lead you to the tallest wax palm trees in the world. You can also stop at a trout farm and enjoy a traditional meal of smoked trout. In the afternoon you will visit the traditional town of Salento to enjoy a tour of this lovely city. Finally, will you be transferred to the traditional village of Filandia to enjoy another city tour that includes beautiful spots such as colonial homes, the Plaza de Bolivar and the coffee shops.
This day will be dedicated to visiting the coffee plantations. You will start by visiting the Hacienda San Alberto which is located near Buenavista Quindío. Start the tour by appreciating the beautiful local architecture and history featured in the main house. As you visit the main house you will also enjoy an introductory conversation about coffee, its preparation, toasting, the characteristics of quality coffee, and the properties that allow the development of so many different varieties of coffee in the world. The route continues through the plantations. Here you can admire the exquisite work of coffee pickers, as well as understanding more of what makes Colombian coffee so unique. Learn all the technicals such as production, harvest, sun drying and treatment. In Colombia, you will see that most of the plantations produce Arabica beans, which is a type of delicate and light tasting coffee, widely recognised and consumed all over the world.
Get ready for a full day of beautiful city views as you will be doing a half day tour of Cartagena. You will start by visiting San Filipe Fortress which was built on San Lazaro hill to protect the city from pirate attacks. As you walk around the fortress you will learn about the castle's construction process, the engineering feats, the tunnels, underground galleries as well as passageways. Next on this tour is Ciudad Vieja (Old City) where you will visit the Convent and Church of San Pedro Claver which dates back to the middle of the XVII century. Visit the Zenu Gold Museum (inaugurated in 1982) where you will find a gold and ceramic collection from the main pre-Columbian cultures. Finally, head to Bovedas where you will see several archways built into the city wall of Cartagena. These were used until the end of 1700s to house armaments and later on (XIX century) as a prison. Nowadays it's an artisan centre where you can appreciate the local handcraft. Afternoon at leisure and overnight stay.
