When Do You Want To Go?

Traditional Hacienda in Avenue of the Volcanos, Ecuador

Nestled in the central Ecuadorian Andes, in a region named Avenue of the Volcanos, is beautiful Hacienda Abraspungo. With emerald lagoons, snow-capped volcanos and verdant valleys on your doorstep, the area is a photographer’s and hikers dream. The hotel lies 5 minutes from the pretty town of Riobamba with its colonial buildings and open-air craft market and 3 hours from Ecuador’s capital, Quito.

The hacienda is built in traditional style, with low-rise whitewashed buildings, tree-lined gardens and decorative fountains in the grounds. Its rustic charm is evident from the moment you step into the reception area, as black and white photographs, masks and lanterns adorn the walls, while hand-sewn Andean textiles drape across wooden benches. Hacienda Abraspungo boasts 38 spacious rooms with garden access, each of which are individually decorated and named after Ecuadorian mountains. These delightful accommodations are a blend of traditional and modern, with vaulted ceilings, exposed stone walls, open fireplace and en-suite bathtub and shower.

When it comes to dining, Hacienda Abraspungo surpasses expectations. The cosy dining area with open fire showcases interesting antiquities and pictures of everyday Andean life. Enjoy the surroundings as accomplished chefs prepare local produce such as chocos, corn, beans and quinoa to create mouth-watering gourmet dishes bursting with local flavour. After dinner, relax in the bar with a glass of wine and plan activities for the next day or exchange travel tips with new found friends.

The local area is ripe for exploration. There are several hiking trails in Avenue of the Volcanos, or you can discover the region via mountain bike or vintage train. A popular excursion by train is to The Devil’s Nose which departs from Riobamba. The journey takes you through the Andean highlands with high-altitude snow-capped volcanos, remote mountain villages and scenic rugged landscapes, so don’t forget your camera!
