Twelve Major Lakes Nestled in the Andes Mountains.
Covering the regions of La Araucania and Los Lagos, the Chilean Lake District stretches 220 miles from the town of Temuco in the north to Puerto Montt in the south. Deep blue mountain lakes, snow-capped volcanoes, forests, ski resorts, year-round sports, and traditional towns make this one of the most visually beautiful regions in Chile, with plenty of activities to be enjoyed.
The Chilean Lakes is a perfect place to spend a few days relaxing or a getting out and exploring on a spectacular self-drive. A great combination is to cross between Chile and Argentina on the famous 3 lakes crossing over the Andes to Bariloche on the Argentine side.
The Area
The Lake District is a large area and without weeks of travel time, most visitors will head to the beautiful town of Pucon, or the sleepy town of Puerto Varas. Puerto Varas is around a 30 minute drive from the airport at Puerto Montt and this attractive town has great views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, and the Llanquihue lake.
Best Time to Go
The Chilean Lake District's scenery is beautiful year round but the best time to visit is from November to March as the winter months can be cold.
