The Caiman Ecological Refuge (Refugio Ecologico Caiman) is one of the finest ecotourism resorts in the Pantanal and is located in the town of Miranda, on the edge of the Southern Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul, 236kms from Campo Grande. It combines a working cattle ranch, with conservation and tourism. These three functions blend together to give you a chance to enjoy the fantastic wildlife viewing and amazing scenery in addition to learning about many species and the Pantaneiro cattle culture.
Refugio Caiman has accommodation in 2 small lodges, Cordilheira and Baiazinha sprawled across the vast working ranch, where cattle live harmoniously with more exotic wild species. Service and facilities are good in both. Recently renovated, Cordilheira has 5 double suites, decorated in contemporary style. Cordilheira offers guests outstanding comfort as well as social areas and a pool on a deck.
Baiazinha Lodge is a bird-shaped house 22kms from Cordilheira, located on the shores of a lake, permanently flooded with crystal-clear water. It has six standard rooms, situated on the wings of the bird. Its balconies, overlooking a west-facing inlet of the lake, are an irresistible haven for watching the wetland sunset. Decorated in traditional ranch style, and complete with pool and hammocks.
At both lodges the knowledgeable English speaking guides will take you out to explore the area and abundance of wildlife by canoe, bike, on horseback or by truck.

Both lodges have access to their own self contained operations. Giving all guests direct access to a restaurant, pool, guides, vehicles and excursions.
The activities on offer at the resort include:
A 3-4 hour walk in the forest that gets you up close and personal with small animals and the local vegetation. It provides the greatest level of interaction with the environment of the Pantanal. The tour is 3km in length and has an ‘easy’ difficulty level.
The lodge holds 30 minute talks about the Pantanal's, animals, ecosystem and what you will observe when you are out on tours. They will provide information about the tours and how you can best prepare for your chosen activities.
These tours taken in the most diverse areas of the resort in the back of specially adapted 4x4s. The route is 25km in length and will allow you to experience the full range of environments and vegetation that exists within the Pantanal. You will see a huge cross section of animals in the Pantanal with a high chance of seeing the elusive Jaguar in their natural habitat.
Nocturnal spotlight of animals. This tour undertaken at night lets you observe the animals you wouldn’t get to see during daylight hours. You will know when you have spotted a Cayman; Their eyes will reflect the light from the vehicles lamp back at you with an intense red glow. The journey have a ‘very easy’ difficulty rating the tour covers 15kms and takes 1.55 hours.
The resort plays an impressive role in the science and conservation of the Pantanal’s iconic species. The tour will visit the Hyacinth Macaw project research centre and the environmental interpretation centre. The final stop is the Paizinho’s bridge, which is the best place in the park to see Spectacled Caimans. This tour has a ‘very easy’ difficulty rating and takes between 3 and 4 hours.
What better way to explore the word’s largest inland wetlands than by taking to the water. You will row in a three-seat Canadian canoes and can see the nearby vegetation and water birds. It is also a good opportunity to listen many of the local sounds, besides admire the fantastic Pantanal’s sunset.
The Refugio Ecologico Caiman has two self contained lodges: The Cordihera and Biazihna. They are located 22km apart on a 53 thousand square hectare private reserve.
The Cordilhera has 5 spacious suites. Each suite consists of a bedroom and living room. Giving you ample space to relax after a long day exploring the Brazilian Pantanal. The lodge is located on the edge of a Cordilheira forest. Head out on to your suite’s balcony and catch sight of some of the hundreds of exotic species that the call the refuge their home. The total capacity of the lodge is 10 people.
The Biazhina meanwhile, has 6 standard double superior rooms and a total capacity of 12 people. The building is shaped like a bird, with its wings outstretched. The lodge is located on the banks of a clear water lake. It is cosy and its decorations are in keeping with the traditional Pantanal ranch style.
