Located along the coast of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mountain Range, Ushuaia offers a unique combination of mountains, sea, glaciers and forests. The city tour takes us along the Coastal Avenue (Maipu), which borders the Beagle Channel and leads to the Port of Ushuaia and the Nautical Club. A catwalk takes us along the peninsula where magnificent views of the city are guaranteed.
We will visit La Mission neighbourhood, chosen by the first immigrants who settled in Ushuaia. We will also visit the Brown and Solier districts which were built by the first immigrants at the beginning of the 20th Century. During the tour we will be able to observe old houses which belonged to the first fuegian families including the Bebans, Pastorizas, Cangas, Fiques and Salomons. The Beban House was built by Fortunato Beban between 1911 and 1913, who ordered it through a catalogue in Sweden. It was one of the most important and ambitious constructions in Ushuaia for a long time, and the place chosen for a number of social events in the city. To avoid demolition, it was disassembled and reconstructed at the present Paseo Antiguos Pobladores. Today, it houses important cultural exhibitions. We will be able to observe the strong contrast given by the aforementioned constructions and those that were built with the arrival of new settlers during the 80's.
The tour will take us to the base of the chairlift at the Le Martial glacier to enjoy fantastic views of the city as the chairlift climbs to the summit. Weather conditions permitting, we will be able to enjoy a long walk close to the base of the chairlift. Our return trip takes us along Alem Avenue, and we then continue at the Maritime Museum and Old Prison of Ushuaia. After a brief visit we will continue to the End of the World Museum, where part of the fueguian past is exhibited.
