The Salinas Grandes are a true jewel located on one of the greatest depressions in the province of Salta with an exposed surface of over 12,000 hectares of salt, 126km away from Purmamarca
Argentina holidays would not be complete without a trip to see the amazing views of The Salinas Grandes.Depart Salta and head to Purmamarca (160 kms 2.5 hours), in the province of Jujuy. Purmamarca is a tiny little gem of a village, huddled at the base of the striking Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colours). It is truly decorated in a rainbow of colours that come to life when the afternoon sun shines on the mountainside. This tiny town consists of just a few blocks of charming adobe houses, rustic bars and shops selling everything from silver jewelry and alpaca sweaters to dolls and medicinal herbs. After some time to explore, our trip continues west to the Salinas Grandes salt desert, an otherworldly expanse of white flatlands that becomes turquoise when it rains.
The road from Purmamarca begins to climb as we pass through hamlets such as Quisquira, Patacal and La Ciénaga and finally reach the winding Cuesta del Lipán. The meandering road spirals up to 4.140 metres above sea level, where the crystal-clear sky mingles with the frost and the grasslands. As we approach the Puna, we observe bush species such as tola and cacti such as cardón. We reach Abra de Potrerillo, where the salt flats are located.
The Salinas Grandes are a true jewel located on one of the greatest depressions in the province of Salta with an exposed surface of over 12,000 hectares of salt, 126km away from Purmamarca. Its infinite vastness dazzles visitors with its white colour. An important amount of the salt that Argentines consume comes from the Salinas and it is interesting to learn how the extraction process works.
Our trip back to Purmamarca will show us a different view from the "Cuesta de Lipán". Multicoloured mountains eroded by the winds and rains border the road as we get back to Purmamarca and continue to Salta.
