Estanicia San Alonso is located in a tranquil setting, tucked away into the wilds of the Ibera Wetlands. Referred to as the “The South American rival to the Okavango Delta,” by the Telegraph, this is vast protected reserve that is home to many ranches and gauchos - Argentinian cowboys. Estancia Sal Alonso is located amidst 11,000 hectares of swamps, forests and bogs, on an island in the Parana Lake.
As a working ranch and farm, Estanicia San Alonso is just one part of a conservation project originally envisioned by American business man and philanthropist Douglas Tompkins in 1996. Access to the island is only possible by 4x4 jeep ride and motor boat ride, or on a local hopper flight.
Guests choose this remote and authentic lodge for its unparalleled proximity to nature, with more than 400 species of bird flitting around the island. The wood panelled buildings are surrounded by of timbo and lapacho trees, and contain 5 simple rooms. One of the rooms has a private ensuite, while the others share one bathroom between two rooms.
The safari-style lounge area is the perfect place to meet and chat with other travellers as you enjoy the large fireplace and library. Meals are included, and feature specialities of the Corrientes, paired with a sophisticated wine list.
People travel from far and wide to experience the multitude of excursions into the surrounding wetlands, and safaris can be arranged on foot, horseback or by boat. All excursions include the services of an expert guide. The most popular options include fly-fishing and bird watching trips.
