When Do You Want To Go?
A 4-day cruise to explore the eastern side of the Galápagos. You’ll start the journey from Santa Cruz Island, sailing north to Genovesa Island before heading east and discovering the impressive scenery of both Santa Fe and San Cristobal islands.
You’ll have the opportunity to walk on beautiful white-sand beaches and through rocks and lava fields. And the Galápagos is of course home to a lot of wonderful wildlife, so you won’t be surprised to see many species casually relaxing in their natural habitat, from sea lions relaxing on the shores to the vast array of birdlife, including swallow-tailed gulls, nesting on rugged cliffs.
Day 1: Friday – Santa Cruz Island
Day 2: Saturday – Galápagos Cruise
Day 3: Sunday – Galápagos Cruise
Day 4: Monday – Galápagos Cruise
You’ll fly from Quito to the Galápagos, arriving in Santa Cruz Island. You will be met by a guide, and transferred to the Catamaran Seaman Journey.
In the afternoon, you’ll set sail to North Seymour Island. This island was formed by a seafloor uplift, as opposed to a volcanic origin like most of the islands in the Galápagos. It has many nesting sites, with a large population of magnificent frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies and swallow-tailed gulls. Marine iguanas and sea lions are also usually present on the shores and cliffs.
Morning: El Barranco
Your next destination will be El Barranco on Genovesa Island. Located in the southern part of Darwin Bay, El Barranco is formed of lava rocks, and its distinct shape is the result of natural erosion. Here you can see many nesting sites. Two species of petrels can be seen in the area, as well as one of its main predators – the short-eared owl.
Afternoon: Darwin Bay
The bay is an ideal place for birdwatchers as it is home to many species such as the red-footed booby, masked booby, lava gull or yellow-crowned and black-crowned lava herons. You can follow the trail along a beautiful white-sand beach before reaching the cliff’s edge, which has amazing views of the island and its endemic species.
Morning: Plazas, Santa Cruz
The ship will continue its journey to Plazas on the eastern side of Santa Cruz Island. There are two small islands just off the coast that were formed by uplift. Despite their small size, they host some of the most interesting, unique species of the Galápagos. You’ll land on this pristine part of the archipelago and explore rugged cliffs, home to fascinating birdlife such as the red-billed tropicbird, the Audubon shearwaters and the brown pelican. Several species of iguanas have also settled in the area, as it abounds in tuna – their favourite food.
Afternoon: Santa Fe
Situated in the southern part of the Galápagos, the Island of Santa Fe is home to a number of endemic species such as the Galápagos hawk, Galápagos snake, Galápagos mockingbird, and one of the three species of land iguanas. As you disembark the ship, you’ll appreciate the stunning clear waters of the area and spot one of the many sea lion colonies. There will be great opportunities for snorkelling in the area amongst the sea lions and wonderful tropical fish. On land, you can admire the island’s distinctive flora such as the salt bushes and the so-called prickly pear, part of the cactus family.
Morning: Jacinto Gordillo Breeding Center
Also known as “La Galapaguera”, Jacinto Gordillo is one of the Galápagos’ breeding centres, situated in Cerro Colorado in San Cristobal Island. You will be able to admire the tortoises that are raised here from birth, staying until they reach 120 days old at which point they are taken to their natural habitat. Exploring the centre is a great opportunity to learn more about their programme as well as the many wonderful reasons behind the centre’s creation.
After the excursion, you’ll be transferred to the airport in order to catch your flight back to the mainland.
Illa Experience Hotel can be found in the welcoming San Marcos neighbourhood of Quito, close to Plaza Grande and a short walk from the city museum and Basilica of the National Vow. Set in a historic mansion house on a peaceful side street, this 10-room luxury boutique hotel offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in this cosmopolitan South American city.
Onboard the M/C Seaman Journey, guests can enjoy the well-furnished areas offering comfort and privacy in a small boat with a capacity of 16 passengers, allowing both intimacy and camaraderie at the same time. There are several resting areas for those who are looking for a quiet place to relax during their Galapagos trip with family and friends in the lazy mid-afternoon sun, or likewise after a busy day of swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, or walking on one of the Galapagos Islands.
