Whether you want to photograph wildlife; kayak in the sheltered waters of the Antarctic peninsula or put on snow shoes and hike on the shore, the range of options at your disposal are incredible.
You will be looked after by a highly experience, engaged and professional crew who will help you to get the most out of your time in one of the World’s most spectacular environments.
Your journey begins in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego; the world’s most southern city. You will have some time to explore this historic city if you arrive the night before. Your cruise will embark in the afternoon through the beagle channel.
The drake passage are the world’s roughest and most intrepid waters. Your cruise will traverse it twice. As you cross the Antarctic convergence, you will see all manner of marine wildlife. The cold upwelling of water creates an environment perfect for the growth of phytoplankton and with it a violent feeding frenzy for all manner of marine life: Keen an eye out for Albatross, Petrel’s and Whales in these waters.
Sailing directly to “High Antarctica” you will pass the Melchior Islands and Schollaert Channel, before navigating into the Neumayer Channel. The channel is a natural harbour and will serve as the base camp for the cruises Antarctic activities. Mountaineers and walkers can trek out on to the ice and reach the summits of the local peaks.
A new day will see you visit the old British Research Station and visit the post office at Port Lockroy on Goudier island. Weather dependent there will be a chance to land on Jougla Point and see the Gentoo penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. The area provides a good chance of seeing Leopard Seals, Crab Eater Seals, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales and Fin Whales.
If the conditions are favourable we will sail through the Lemaire Channel to Booth Island, Pleaneau and Petermann Island where Adelie penguins and blue eyed shags can be found, with more chances to see Humpback Whales, Minke Whales and Fin Whales. The ship will choose a new base camp which is suitable for the next day’s activity.
At Neko Harbour you will set foot on the Antarctic Continent. Your landing will takes place on the moraine at the foot of a Vast Glacier. There will be an opportunity for Zodiak cruises and Kayaking around the bay. There is also a colony of several hundred photogenic Gentoo Penguins.
There is a further full day to enjoy the bay with adventure activities Scuba diving is also available but this does cost extra. A small group of walkers will get to climb up on to the glacier high ground. The group will then spend the night camping in Paradise bay.
You will break camp in the morning and set sail for the drake passage passing the Melchior Islands en-route.
As you cross the drake passage there will be ample opportunity to see a vast selection of seabirds.
You will arrive in Ushuaia in the morning, enjoying breakfast before disembarking.
